Does anyone know Curley Chalkers Copedent

Post by Wayne Franco »

A friend of mine is ordering a new guitar and asked me what his setup on C6 was. Its not in the tuning section so I thought I would just ask.

Thanks for any help.

You can find this information in Winnie Winston's pedal steel instruction book. In the last pages of the book there is also listed the setups of most other major players of that era. (it was published in the mid 70's I believe)

Thanks for that information

I'll see if he still has that book. I use to but haven't seen it in years.

Wayne: I recently ran off a few copies of my book Pushin' Pedals and there is a a 1967 article on Curly that has his setup from those days. Send me your snail mail address and I'll send you a copy.

Regards, Paul

Curly was a little reluctant sometimes, to tell it all, but; if you're wondering about his 2-LVK's I can help you there, if you contact me.

Hmm...seems like Curly wasn't the only one reluctant to tell (it) all! ;-)

Chalker's set-up is on the "Counterpoint" LP and it lists the changes on the two vertical knee levers:

The LKLV raises 1st string E to F and raises the 3rd string A to A#.
The LKRV raises the 1st string E to F and lowers the 3rd string A to Ab.

It's interesting to note that "Big Hits on Big Steel" (included on the "Counterpoint" CD) was cut April, 1966 at Starday on a Fender 2000. "Counterpoint" was cut on an MSA in Nashville at Jack Clements studio January, 1971.

Where'd you find Counterpoint on cd?

Well, I think you got it wrong! One LKV-Raised #1 & Raised #3 (½-tone ea,) and one LKV-Lowered #1 and Raised #3 (½-tone ea,) Now, I guess we can argue about that until next Tuesday! I got my information directly from Curly, during a weak-moment! Maybe he forgot or mistated the facts!

P. Gleespen,

Sorry, when I said "Counterpoint" CD, I meant "Counterpoint" LP (Steel Guitar Record Club No. 12) But this brings up a good point. If ever there was a steel guitar LP that needed to be released on CD, it's "Counterpoint" & "Big Hits on Big Steel."

Robert. A very good request that I plan to honor "half way". I no longer have the release rights to "Big Hits On Big Steel", but two of Curly's albums that I own I intend to re-release on one CD within the next year. They are "Counterpoint" and "Nevada Breaks".

I'm also going to include a couple of live performance tunes that never made their way on to any album. That should enhance the album a bit for those hundreds of past customers of mine who bought the albums in LP and cassette formats.

I'll post here on the Forum when the album becomes available. The "book" with the CD will contain as much of his musical bio as I can accumulate. For the CD's book, I may ask for some input from Forumites as to additional info about Curly that I didn't include on the jacket of the Counterpoint album. ...Tom

John is right on the two verts. When used together the move on the first (E) cancelled out and the third (A) just became Bb. In '69 at the Dallas show, his ShoBud Crossover was on display in the ShoBud booth. Nobody was around and I snuck under the levers to verify. Russ Wever can also verify this, as he's been around Curly's guitar several times. Winston's book says it also.

As long as we're talking about Curly, I want to mention that I still have hundreds of copies of the DVD in my garage.

I honestly believe that this DVD is the ultimate document of Chalker's genius. As I said before, I produced it in order to preserve these performances and insure that they not be lost.
Please visit my web site and Soundcloud page and listen to the music posted there.

Tom Bradshaw, Thanks for your plans to release a CD of Curly Chalker’s “Counterpoint,” “Nevada Breaks” plus extra live cuts. Everyone will now be able to replace their worn LP and tape copies and younger players will have a valuable opportunity to hear and learn Chalker’s style.

A Chalker CD combined with Mike Perlowin’s Chalker DVD's would be an important learning resource. I was able to transcribe “Danny Boy” in this way. I listened to the “Counterpoint” LP arrangement and then watched the DVD version to see where on the fretboard Chalker was voicing his chords. Going back and forth between the DVD and the LP, I was able to learn and adapt most of Chalker’s arrangement to my factory C-6th set-up.

Here’s the Db Major 9 ending chord on “Danny Boy.”

Push your 8th Pedal
Knee lever that lowers your 3rd string ½
Knee lever that lowers your 4th string ½
Play these strings in an arpeggio: 10-9-8-7-6-4-3-2. (As these strings are ringing harmonic the 2nd string)

Refer to the "Counterpoint" version and the DVD version for the exact timing. Curly plays this chord on both versions.

Hats off, once again, to Tom Bradshaw and Mike Perlowin for preserving the music of this important artist.

Referring to my previous post:

This Db Major 9 chord is played at the 4th fret.

If each and everyone of us knew Chalker's set up like the back of our hands it wouldn't help us any. The only one that could possibly sound as good as Curly Chalker would be Curly himself. He was truely a one of a kind.
