Texas Show Smokin II
We have a new President. Albert Talley. I guess most of you remember that I said I would not attend the show, and I would not have been there, not because of the smoking, but the way it was voted in.
I will attend the Dallas show and will support Albert Talley in every way I can.

You'll find that the Harvey Hotel's smoking policy is no smoking anywhere on the main floor and non-smoking floors except for the bar, front lobby, and restaurants' smoking sections.
The NO smoking areas INCLUDE the meeting areas and rooms.
You can call the front desk for confirmation, (972) 929-4500.

Actually, I'm under the impression that in the common areas, the hotel allows only cigarette smoking (no cigars)in the bar, and that they bend the rules to allow smoking in the auditorium as a favor to the TSGA. The hotel probably (pardon the pun) "breathed" a sigh of relief when the decision was made.

I should be smart and say nothing, but I'll run the risk of firing the debate. Smoking has been banned, hammered, and restricted socially and legally for the last 30 years. Every year more laws are passed and hard core smokers just don't get it. They never will. It's not about freedom; it's about common courtesy! You walk into a room with a lit cigarette and you foul the air, plain and simple. Non smokers find this distasteful and repulsive. It's intensified in the smaller restrooms, where it's common to see smokers puffing away. O.K., I'll take cover now, so fire at will.

I have to say that, as much as I've enjoyed the two ISGCs I've attended in St Louis, my pleasure has been marred by the almost insufferable atmosphere in the big room. Restricting the smokers to the left-hand section of the auditorium is no more than a gesture that has no discernible effect. After all our coming and going, it wasn't long before our 'no smoking room' at the Millenium was contaminated by the smell of smoke from our clothes.
I was amazed that there wasn't a general smoking ban in effect in St Louis, but my wife informed me that it's by no means a ubiquitus regulation, and its application varies from State to State.
Jim Saunders has 'nailed it' - a non-smoker finds the smell objectionable, quite apart from any health issues that may arise. I know this is irksome to smokers, who are finding themselves herded outside into the open-air to indulge, but these are enlightened times - I, for one, can't wait until the ban is total.

I have just recently come to appreciate the non-smokers viewpoint.
As a life time smoker who quit in 1984 after a cancer scare, I have always said that it didn't matter to me whether I had a non-smoking environment.
However, we always reserve non-smoking rooms but we recently had to accept a smoking room. I thought it wouldn't matter after 40 years of smoking, but the stale odor of cigarettes in the room almost made me ill. Cigarette smoke while it's being smoked does not bother me.
Now, I always avoid smoking rooms and smoking environment "whenever possible".
P.S.
I just re-read my post and it sounded like I was not going to the Dallas show if there was smoking, but that was not my intent...I do take a non-smoking room and environment "when it is available"....but "smoking" does not deter me from going anywhere I want to go when it isn't! I worked the clubs many years where I almost had to have a guide to find the rest-room for the smoke....and I was contributing to it also. www.genejones.com
[This message was edited by Gene Jones on 17 February 2003 at 08:10 AM.]

[This message was edited by Gene Jones on 17 February 2003 at 08:13 AM.]

The City of Dallas passed the no smoking ban in restaurants only. The mayor, wanted the ban to include bars also, but only got the restaurants. Laura Miller (mayor)crammed this ordinance down the throats of citizens and business owners who should have a choice. You see, they only have to have a coucil vote to pass the bill. The restaurant owners are pissed because their business is going to leave the city limits to the burbs. They also can't define what is a bar and what is a restaurant. This is so stupid. I'm a non-smoker, but I believe a private businessman should choose his clientel if there is a market for all smoking. You non-smokers don't go to those places if it bothers you. Danny is correct. The Harvey is in Irving, Tx. Maybe next year Irving will have a stupid ban in place. So, SMOKE 'EM IF YOU GOT 'EM.

After making my post on this topic I had a flashback to my childhood. We had a one bathroom house with a family of six. This required an orderly system of taking turns. My dad came just before me. He'd sit on the throne doing his morning constitutional which included his first cigarette. When he finished, I'd walk into a cloud of smoke and lingering other fumes for my turn. Whoa!
Anyway, somehow I still took up smoking and quit after dad died of lung cancer. But, again, no health issues are raised; just common courtesy. See you all in Dallas!

I know I was very PO'd last year when a certain local pedal steel assembly company posted their own no smoking signs in the hall outside their display room.
