Don't forget the 4 stages of the music executive's mind. I will plug in Garth's name for example.
1) Who's Garth Brooks?
2) Bring me Garth Brooks
3) Bring me another Garth Brooks
4) Who's Garth Brooks?
Gone are the days when an artist is recognized by his distinctive style. It seems like everybody is defined by another person's style. Ray Charles had to break out of copying another person's style before he found his own voice.

Correct again Danny, if you don't sound like what's happening, you don't get the record signing deal. That kills all individuality right there.
Unlike the golden 50's when Webb, Faron, Hank Snow, Lefty, Carl Smith, Ernest, Loretta, Kitty, Jean, and so on were ALL totally different, and had soul, quality of performance and delivery without tricks like flying in on a wire, smoke machines, and 20.000 watt PA amplification!
The youth today won't understand that quality is what sold tickets then, not tricks and volume.

If the shoe fits, wear it.
It's actually been that way a long time. Flame suit on (and I'm covered with flame killing foam)
Lefty Frizell is the predecessor of Merle's Voice. Dean Martin is the voice of one of the Mills Brothers. The list goes on and on. Maybe these guys were inspired by the originals and took it to the next level?...

Mr.Seymore, right on,all the above you mentioned above had their OWN STYLE,Both the vocals and pickers,In the 40's and 50's when you heard a SONG on the radio you did'nt have to guess you was singing it or picking on it,You may not haved liked them but you KNEW IMMEDIATELY who it was,The GREAT Dale Watson say's it best in his song,[HELP ME MERLE,I'M BREAKING OUT IN A NASHVILLE RASH.]DYKBC.
Hard headed, opinionated old geezer. BAMA CHARLIE. GOD BLESS AMERICA. ANIMAL RIGHTS ACTIVIST. SUPPORT LIVE MUSIC !

the biggest joke to me is when they have one of those "tribute" parties on CMT, and then they line up all the new guys to sing old guys tunes.I remember "tribute to Conway Twitty" show, it was so pitiful I had to change my channel and watch some spangebob...ridiculous... I just heard Neil McCoy singing some old song as a "tribute" to someone (I can`t remember) and as much as I like Neil his singing sucked so bad I had to laugh...there is not a one decent singer that has a carisma and balls of the old guys... I don`t even watch GOO anymore, everytime I watch it there is some new "artist" becoming a member, in the old days they wouldn`t let Elvis on there and today every week we have a new member...joke... I recorded some demo stuff for my friend Stephen Cochran and it was nice, real country feel, now he has that song released on his CD and the same song sounds more like some pop crap than anyrhing else.Drums and electric guitars and of course not a "S" from the steel guitar...but he is doing it....I used to tell a joke years ago when I was around down town, and it goes like this:
good looking, sexy young guy ,gets of the bus at the Nashville Grayhound station.... a man approaches him and says:
"hi there partner,I am a famous music executive here in town, would you like to become a new country music star??"....
guy says:" well, I don`t know, I can`t sing and I don`t really like country music"....
and the man says:" great, you`re perfect"....

Hey everyone...
I wish someone like Dawn Sears would get a deal...and have airplay on radio.
Heard her sing 'Sweet Memories"...? or anything else for that matter....
That is a voice - - plenty of soul too..
When I see others "out there" and her "not" that is what troubles me.
However, I do understand that "real" singing is only part of the requirements.
If singing was all... then there would be no need for an "artist development" deal.
Well... thats my rant..

If you guys want to see a discussion about Country Music now a days check out this thread :
What is it about new Country?
Under steel players.
I mentioned Carrie Underwood and Taylor Swift and boy did that open the flood gates !!!
One guy said that the "Taylor Swift" machine is more for her writting abilities, OK that is fine but why do we have to listen to her sing ?? !!
I get worn out changing the channel on TV and Radio everytime she comes one !!!
