with all due respect, an OFFICIAL recession has not been reached, negative multiple quarters, but forgetting that, anyone who has been laid off and out of work for some time with no income has been in there own private recession .
Yes it has Tony.....many many moons ago.I see it all around me here.Banks closing.....gas stations raising prices(you pump gas...blink your eyes and another 10cents have been added).
Just curiosity from me Tony.......what do you do for a living?I am a painter.....with enough work(thank God).
Nevertheless do I have to turn every dime twice before spending it.
I don't even take my guitar out of the house no more because of the costs to get to a gig.

I don`t think this would be the best thing to do, concidering that gas in Europe is almost 10 bucks per gallon, as bad as it is here , Europe has been hit even harder, I think we have to sit tight and wait this mess out. I tought about going back to Croatia and play with some Austrian or Italian bands, I may still do that but I have to think about it, not twice but 5 times....

Well guys, steel sales are WAY up, I can't keep them in stock, can't even get anywhere near enough for stock. I have them on order from every major builder and factory.
Seems like music is the great entertainment that
folks don't give up. Great huh?
Business is much better this year than in the last three years.
Who do I thank for this?
YOU!
And I'm doing it now! :)
The world of steel guitar is a great world to live in, so get out and enjoy it! Nothing negitive here.

As a matter of fact, I need some good major brand used guitars at fair prices, if you have anything extra around the house email me with a price and description. I'll give you a yes or no immediately.

Well despite the soaring price of gas etc.. I have more forward bookings for the next couple of months than I have had in ages ..mostly local stuff, but a few down country as well. I think music is still viewed as a good recipe for raising the spirits when everything else is crap !! + :D

well, I`m not arguing that some people are not in a recession, but to say that we as a country are not is funny, with all the airlines filling bankruptcies, gas prices, car industry firing people, GM has announced that they may file for bankruptcy, 47 million people without health insurance, mortgage meltdown, bankrupcies sky rocketing, goverment bailing out broke banks..etc..etc...it is not that we are not in a recession yet, we are in recession but we are almost in a depression, the fact that you sell $50K of equipment is good for you, but it doesn`t reflect the actual picture of the economy in the country...

Db

btw..to blame $crewed up economy on foreign workers is crazy, they have a job because only that way you can buy a house for $120.000 , if you hire American workers the same house will coust you twice that much, and nobody buys any houses now any way..and those few pennys those poor guys make working at the warehouses or strawberry patches are nothing comparing to some other things..Germany built the whole country and the strongest economy in Europe with help of foreign workers (gastarbaiters) from Turkey,Yugoslavia,Rumunia etc...to say that Mexican workers are to blame for our financial dissaster is crazy...

There biggest enemy is not recession issues but rather they have been replaced by "other" workers who work for much less and do not put there money in banks. That has been indeed going on for years and it is getting worse.
OK Tony why aren't the Taco Bell sales up.

Just kidding Tony love your picking.

We also play loud and clean. To give you an example, my Evans amp is on ten all night and it (and everything else) is miked thru the PA. Our PA mains have 3,000 watts.
Good God Almighty! Where are you playing, Big Sur, and can any of you hear anything when you're not on stage?

I think Danny plays good music at a place called The Bleeding Ear Soloon in Fresno.

The reality is that a 3,000 watt PA system is only twice as loud as a 300 watt PA system.

Not ten times louder as one may expect.

Although Bo, I do like that name for a club!

I seem to be doing pretty good these days. At least by my rather low standards. I have had a couple tours get cancelled on me but there is plenty of work around town. My recording work is all pedal steel but about half my live gigs are playing old swing/blues/ragtime stuff on a lap steel. That music is super fun to play. I never know whats happening from one month to the next but that has never bothered me much.
One way to bring down expenses is to cook at home more. I cut back on meat also. Its way cheaper and I feel better.

Except for a fly date to Alaska I'm keeping to Michigan and mostly to 1-2 hours drive radius.

I thank Mother Earth for the bounty of work she has given me.

Oh, and I quit drinking beer. Saving me a bundle.

I'm not arguing that we may have gone right past recession, I personally think we have.

Steel Guitar players are smart people, we know how to use a add, subtract and use a calculator ! We know how to balance the raises and the lowers ...

And I like Taco Bell ! But I only go there maybe once every couple of months ..

Recession or depression

Post by Brad Malone »

Hey Damir, You are exactly correct...BTW don't wait until the government gives you information about a recesssion. The government figures are a bunch of lies..it's like their unemployment figures...once you are done collecting unemployment money and have not found a job, you are off their radar screen...the unemployment figure is much higher than the government indicates...same way if you lose your $30 an hour job and replace it with a $12 an hour job...the government figures do not distinguish your situation. Donald Trump said we were in a recession 1 year ago and he knows what he is talking about..he has 4 casinos in Atlantic City..BTW all hotel and casino stocks are near their lows...here another indicator>Current estimates from the American Trucking Industry indicate that nearly 1000 small trucking firms go out of business every time diesel fuel prices push up more than a dime<< Damir, wait until the people get their $5000 home heating bills. Home heating oil has risen $2.20 a gallon since last year and a lot of people use 800 to 1000 gallons, especially in the northern states.

You guys are too much!

You're the first ones to go ballistic if someone plays for free, or for very little money.

But if some illegal comes here and works his heart out to do your "dirty work" for a few dollars a day...well...that's different, that's alright.

Got news for you guys...

If someone can take a laborer's job for next to nothing and you don't mind, then it oughta be perfectly alright for somebody in the music business to do the same thing. So don't come here moaning when your band loses the job to some DJ who plays karaoke for $100 a night.

I've seen it time and time again, right here on the forum. Guys brag about how well they're doing and then a year or two later - they're moaning about jobs being so scarce.

The only one who gets surprised by this is the guy who thinks "it can't happen to me".

Count your blessings while you have 'em.

Guitar tuning

Danny Bates writes>>They don't hear some idiot tuning up his guitar.<<

Question, if one tunes up their guitar, are they an idiot?

Move to Fla. for a month or two

Post by Brad Malone »

Hey Damir, You may be on to something. Considering that 90% of their $5000 home heating cost will occur in about 4 of the coldest months, they might be better off to set their thermostat to 40 degrees and head to Florida for a month or two...spend it in Florida or spend it on home heating oil...the choice is theirs. Damir, if the "Florida tourist promoters" get wind of our idea, they may just use it.
