I must have missed something with CMT

Post by Leroy Riggs »

I don't watch CMT because of their style of 'country' but they must be sneaking into a new format.

I surfed through that channel today and found programming such as 'Nanny 911',Silverado', 'Dale", 'Trading Spouses", Mobile Home Disaster', et al.

Music was mostly at night and early morning.

How long has these changes been going on?

I can't turn away from CMT because I've been watchin' it since I was just a kid in the eighties. I'm also friends with CMT's Katie Cook, who hosts the CMT Insider show.

My son asked me if I knew the difference in old TV and new TV. I couldn't answer.
"Reality shows!" was his answer.

These changes happened while we weren't looking.

Leroy, I think it's been goin' on since 2004, 2005, or 2006. I love the CMT Insider show and the Top Twenty Countdown shows.

The only time I watch "Crappy Music Television" is when they broadcast the Crossroads shows. The rest of the time, the network should just go off the air. Or maybe sell Tupperware.

Like I said, I don't watch the station anyway so it's not here nor there for me. It's just that when I found the change, it surprised me.

I wonder what that says about today's 'country'.

I don't think it's anything new, stations have always showed other programs under a certain label.

My wife has pointed out that CMT had a format in the past that was not unlike that of GAC. When you compare the two channels, it seems to show CMT has changed a lot and GAC has remained pro-video and country-talk. This is not a simple night-time change--it's changed even during prime time to non-music shows. Country videos now seem to be 'a second thought'.

Oh well, whatever--not important.

Could it be that an all-music channel simply isn't going to work in the long run? Look what happened to MTV, the Nashville Network, and MuchMore Music (the Canadian version of MTV).

Yeah, that could be the case. It'll be interesting to see if GAC does the same thing in the future.

Yep, 'life changes'. That's good. It could get real boring if it didn't. :) :)

When comedian George Carlin died, Stephen Colbert did a tribute to him, including an update on the new seven words you can't say on t.v.:

"This reality show is a bad idea."

I certainly don't watch CMT anymore. If they would have a wideranging video music format such as early country shows right up to what is going on now it would have more appeal to a wide audience!

Ok, I watched about 5 minutes of that this morning. That's all I could take. The judges are the worse part in my opinion. Here you have 3 goof-balls up there. Only one I recognized, the one with Big & Rich. Don't really know which one and don't care to know. His opinion of how music should be is worthless. What does he know? Just because he's a big "star" in todays so called country music means nothing. The other two were just as useless in their knowledge of country music.
I'm buying all of my music out of Texas anymore. I wouldn't give 2 cents for the entire music business in Nashville.

Ok, I've finished griping and complaining now. I feel better. :)

I was amazed when even the History Channel went to reality junk, like "Ice Road Truckers".

And why haven't these guys heard of studded tires?

I watched about half of one show, and that was enough to make me consider roller derby to be more intellectually demanding.

Why not our own Channel ?

Post by John P. Phillips »

Hey guys, Why don't we form a corporation of out own and start the "NOSTALGA COUNTRY CHANNEL". The NCC. Then a group of us, can oversee programming. Music shows like The Wilburns, Hee Haw, E.T, Porter, Flatt & Scruggs, all the great old shows and stuff like Ralph Emery,The old Bobby Bare show, Church Street Station, and show old westerns with country stars in them. I think it would go over if it was run right, just like the old TNN when it first started. Even develope new game shows based in country.
Anybody got any other ideas? Just my two pennies.

NCC Great idea. I would definately subscribe, my luck we wouldn't be able to access the channel here in the great white north. Heck I'd find a way. I would!

CMT found out the same thing MTV did. When you only hold kids attention 5 minutes at a time, with breaks in between, they quickly slip away. So they went back to the old tried-and-true 30-60 minute format, to try to hold viewers through several ad cycles.
