Bachman Turner Overdrive would be classified as "Country" in today's market.

Donny,
When LeAnn came out with "Blue" it was her first single atleast 10 years ago. It's not current today and "Remember When" was Alan Jackson. :)

With respect I know what you guys like and want. Many of you don't listen to Top 40 Country Today so you really don't know. You make comments about it being Crap. Alot of the older stuff was Crap! I just think if you can't say anything good about it, why comment. Change the channel and keep buying what you like. Today, You have so many more choices! :)

I do think Kenny writes from his heart and records good material. I'd like to hear more Steel, though! :) JMO

We ONLY tend to rememeber the good stuff from the past,
that floated on the top of a great churning cespool
of barely listenable KRAP, that for a short time
got limited radio play, and then was gratefully
erased from the collective memory.
it is the same today.

From the last two years crop,
there will be a few classic and timeless songs,
that will be heard in a future, when we are dust.

Our rampant disgust with the rest of the tripe
may cause us to miss them; never knowing.

And I DON'T mean Ride a Cowboy Save a Horse.
Even if we still occasionally hear
'Bird is the Word',
'Monster Mash' and
'Yes I Have No Bananas'....

Oh I know Monster Mash well.
Actually covered it one Halloween.

What I am saying is that it is a novelty song,
and not a proper classic construct.
It IS a classic in it's sub-genre.

Ride a Cowboy fits in that novelty song catagory.

We Don't hear 'A Boy Named Sue' a lot these days.

Roger Miller had many great funny well constructed tunes.
But we usually only hear 'King Of The Road' now.

How much Countrypolitain do we hear now?
Except on out own 'turntables'.

One more time ; Guys, as in any industry, it is all about money. Kenny is an all right guy. He is doing exactly what his management is telling him to do to make money, and it is working as he is one of the top grossing acts in the music business. Call his music anything you like, but you will have to admit it appeals to millions of people. Will ya'll please wait a second to respond so that I can get my flame retardant suit on. Jody.

Hi, LJ. Hope you didn't take offense at my suggestion--none intended.

KNIX is strictly top 40 current--you know, the "rigid sameness," where everyone is playing/singing at the same time, as though they were figthing for attention; for that, I find myself wondering what I would add were I in the band.

There is a station here at 96.3 (can't remember the call) touting 'real country' all the time, but its only marginally better.

For Chesney, well, there's no good or bad about it, but I wouldn't see him any sooner than I'd see Dolly Parton. Neither reaches out, you know.

PS: Sorry to not know, but who's Bill Arnold?

Back to the ? about Kenny being Country?
When he first started he was Country. He has strayed like many other older artist have, going middle of the road. Nothing new there......

He's not so traditional anymore, but he appeals to most fans. Look at where he stands today and record sales prove he is liked! :)

He does have a steel in his band and has always used steel! :)

I want to hear good steel and lots of it. Rock, country, jazz, Hawaiian, whatever,,

1. I dont want to hear R&B style singing from white suburbanites,,

2. I dont want to hear classic rock guitar riffs,,

3. I dont want to hear classic rock drums,,

4. I dont want to see a rock band with a banjo player,,

5. I dont want to listen to someone pretend to be southern.

6. I REALLY dont want to hear guitarists do pedal steel licks on a stratocaster (or tele for that matter) while the steel player gets put in a keyboard role.

so I dont listen to newer country, because to me 1-5 all added together makes me want to gouge my ear-drums out, and 6 make me want to hit someone. I wish I did like it,,cause it would be easier to enjoy the radio.

Isn't that the great Hal Rugg on steel.
The Statler Brother's didn't sound so country to me on most of their songs.

I'm not one of those that put ketchup on my steak! :)

I hadn't even looked at this thread till now. I think the initial question is too long.

It should just be, "Why is Chesney?"

You're right, Theresa. The Statlers don't really sound very Country on a lot of their stuff. It was the lyrical content of that comedy song I liked. :)

If the Statlers DIDN'T SOUND VERY COUNTRY...
What did the sound like??? Barbershop quartet?

From outside of Nashville, they sure sounded country.
Just not bluegrass or Texas country.
