Hi Lyle,

You got it right, Johnny will be joining us on the 7th of June. Johnny has played the last two years and does a great job. We always have a great house backup band and players who drop in and pick as well.

You ought to skip down here from Illinios and join us on the 7th. There are others traveling from there to our show. I was at the Southern IL show two weeks ago and had a blast. It's all like a big family reunion, here at Marshfield we treat you so many different ways you gotta like some of them. ;-)

GOD bless!

Terry, Thanks for the invite. I played first thing thursday morning at Mt. Vernon and had to get back home for a family obligation. Sorry I did not get to meet you. Johnny and I and and a bunch of others get together at least once a year and jam all afternoon at his brothers's house in Decatur. Hope to see you sometime.

Hey Terry, I'll try to make the next show. I'm going to the Deep South Steel Guitar Jam on June 7 or we would come to Missouri. I'm playing/traveling to one show a month right now. Good luck!

Just 33 days away from our 3rd Annual Marshfield Steel Guitar Show.

Please email or contact me, if you are planning on participating or doing the Russ Hicks seminar on Saturday morning. It is going to be great!

Russ teaches some of his famous steel licks he used on hit recording sessions and speed pickin' things he and the late Jimmy Crawford played. He is a great player and teacher and I am also planning on doing the seminar with him as well, or as much of it as I can. It is about 2 hours of Hicks Licks and knowledge, and alot of one on one attention as well.

GOD bless!

Directions to Jubilee Theater

Post by David Tunnell »

Terry asked me to post directions to the theater. I will post them in all caps and in different colors so that they will be easier to find when scrolling through. Here are the directions:

COMING FROM THE WEST (SPRINGFIELD/JOPLIN/TULSA):
TAKE I-44 EAST TO EXIT 100 (MARSHFIELD)
TURN RIGHT ONTO HIGHWAY 38.
CONTINUE ON HIGHWAY 38 FOR ABOUT 1.5 MILES (THE ROAD WILL CURVE TWICE, BUT STAY ON IT).
YOU WILL COME TO A 4-WAY STOP.
TURN RIGHT AT THE FOUR WAY STOP ONTO CRITTENDEN STREET.
GO ONE BLOCK TO THE STOP SIGN. THE JUBILEE THEATER IS ON YOUR RIGHT. PARKING/ENTRANCE IS ON THE WEST SIDE OF THE BUILDING.

COMING FROM THE EAST (ROLLA/ST. LOUIS):
TAKE I-44 EAST TO EXIT 100 (MARSHFIELD)
TURN LEFT ONTO HIGHWAY 38.

COMING FROM THE SOUTHEAST (WEST PLAINS/POPLAR BLUFF/CAPE GIRARDEAU):
TAKE U.S. HIGHWAY 60 WEST TO DIGGINS (APPROX. 4 MILES WEST OF SEYMOUR)
JUST PAST DIGGINS, TURN RIGHT ON HIGHWAY A.
FOLLOW HIGHWAY A APPROX. 12 MILES.
IN MARSHFIELD, HIGHWAY A MAKES A SQUARE CORNER. JUBILEE THEATER IS RIGHT ON THAT CORNER. KEEP GOING STRAIGHT INTO THE PARKING LOT.

These directions should get you there. We hope you will come out. Terry has a good show lined up.
Very truly yours,

Thanks guys! Yes, this is going to be a whale of show.

All the guys playing are really great players and great to be around. It's like a big family reunion here at Marshfield, you never can tell who all will show up. One year Keith Hilton's cusin' came up from Arkansas and filled in for Keith. Man he was a picker and he even had tamed pet turkey with him. ;-)

Larry we are looking forward to having you and Jean on the show this year.

Thanks everybody and we will be seeing you all in a few short days.

Thanks and GOD bless!

Hi Forum Members and Steel Lovers,

We got a phone call last night from Doc Martin up in Iowa, he still plans to be here for this year's show. Doc was original member on the Ozark Steel Guitar Show Springfield, MO 1950s nationwide T.V. That was a really big deal then and set the stage for alot of today's shows.

Next another great steel player Pastor Cliff Waterman is joining us as well! Cliff plays it all and he's a great guy! Welcome aboard Cliff!

Also, if any of you want to get in on the Russ Hick's Steel Seminar on Saturday morning please contact me. We are trying to figure out how many will be in on it. This is a real special treat and if your serious about steel you won't want to miss it. I want to steal some of his steel licks! ;-)

His seminar is about 2 hours long and well worth it. Russ Hick's is a very quite and modest person, he would never brag on himself. But for those that might not know it, his resume/bio looks like he's played and recorded with about everybody. He played on alot of major Nashville and elsewhere sessions, he was 13 years staff musician Hee Haw television, Austin City Limits, he also played on some well known Hollywood movie soundtracks with Clint Eastwood starrinbg in the movies. He worked the road and traveled the world with famous stars like Connie Smith, Ray Price, Kitty Wells, Charlie McCoy Band, etc., etc.

Well, I have been a Russ Hicks fan since I first heard him and the late Steel Guitar Hall of Famer Jimmie Crawford do their 1970s album titled "Chicken Pickin' Good." They played it all on that L.P. record (That was B.C. before these things we call CDs), Buddy Emmons played bass on it with them. Russ Hicks also shared an album or CD with the so-called "Nashville Bar Association," that L.P> and CD now included steel players Buddy Emmons, Jimmie Crawford, John Hughey, Sonny Garrish and of course our Russ Hicks.

Russ Hicks is a super steel player and just a super nice guy. We feel very honored to have him as this year's special guest at our 3rd Annual Marshfield MO Steel Show!

GOD bless and see you all on the 7th!

Please come join us at Marshfield, MO on June 7. Terry puts in hours of work to put this show together for 1 reason - because he loves the steel guitar. It will be a good one. I hope to see you there!

Mike, I'll be there! I appreciate Terry asking me again as I couldn't make it last year. For the life of me, I can't understand why he wants me to play. He said something about needing a comedy act! I don't tell jokes so it must have something to do with my playing  See you all there. Ray

You'd better get here early that morning on the 7th before Scotty Henderson. Scotty has a big appetite. We had to hide the pie last time. ;-)

Here is a list of the Confirmed Steel Players for the 3rd Annual Marshfield Steel Guitar Show on June 7th, 2008:

Russ Hicks
DeWitt "Scotty" Scott
Rob Parker
J.D. Walters
Keith Hilton
Jimmy Burrell
Jerry Roller
Jimmy Sentlinger
Hank Ruf
Pastor Cliff Waterman
Dennis Detweiler
Mike McGee
Jack Musgrave
Scotty Henderson
Larry Baker & Jean DeVore
Ray Qualls
Terry Wood

Here are a few other questions people have asked about and some of my concerns:

1) We have a great backup band and time to switch players takes alot of time. We will keep people on schedule and cannot switch out entire bands all day.
if we start getting behind in time, your playing set will be shortened.

2) We will have some people helping with the equipment in and out of the building.

3) There is plenty of parking.

4) You may come and go throughout the day, if you keep your ticket.

5) Admission is $12 for the entire day. Players and their wives do not pay but we do charge admission. It takes alot of work, time, and money to operate these steel shows.

6) Regular cameras are allowed but individuals may not video tape the show.

7) Russ Hicks will conduct about a two hour seminar that morning and it will be downstairs.

Thanks for your cooperation and GOD bless!

Terry, who are the confirmed players in the staff band?
I'm looking forward to playing the show. Looks like a great schedule of steel players. Russ Hicks and DeWitt Scott are a great pair to feature any show.

Hi Dennis,

Among the backup players are Wayne Florang Drums, Ron Blaker drums, Leon Lindsey keyboards, David Tunnell keyboards, Johnny Spaugh Guitar, Curtis Williams guitar, Kevin Haffey bass, Lou Ann Turner bass and others.

The backup players I have always do a fine job. They are really great guys too.

We just can't afford to hire session players from Nashville and other places that some of the larger shows have working for them.

The best backup band I've ever probably heard was at Mt. Vernon, IL three weeks ago. That group included Rick Boyer on Bass and session lead player from Nashville, and the drummer for the Time Keepers Band Nashville and others. They were super, but I can't afford to hire all of them.

Hope this helps!

Dennis, I can vouch for Wayne Florang on drums, trust me Wayne has been around and can cut the job. Wayne plays in my band, maybe that will settle your nerves. The guitar players and bass players have different styles, so listen to them and pick one before you go on. I am personally going to try and keep my band small. May even do a couple of numbers without a band. Dennis, I have a new little cracker box guitar. It is guaranteed to be the only one at the Show. I guarantee it will curl your hair. I have some new stuff with a new knee lever that has opened up a whole new world. Consider me as armed with a new steel and dangerous. I was in hopes your sister would come play some bass Dennis.

Hi Keith,
Yes, Wayne can do it all. He's from Cedar Rapids Iowa. We played together for several years in the 70's. Jeanne and I are planning on driving down friday. Wayne and Jeanne work well together. 4/4 a specialty. I'm sure she would be happy to play your set with you.
See you soon.

Dennis, I am still not up to speed health-wise. After getting out of the hospital, and starting to feel a little better, I came down with the flu. It has really hammered me. I guess my system was run down. I am into the flu 9 days now. Old age is not for sissies, you just have to "bone up" and take it. I may try a couple of different things at the Marshfield Show. I may play one tune by myself, without a band. I may also try something I have not seen anyone do. I may try to play a hard core Texas 4/4 shuffle, using two bass players and a drummer. No other instruments. Just me, 2 bass players, and 1 drummer. Ask your sister if she would be one of the 2 bass players. I am wanting to draw blood while sink my teeth into a good old hard core Texas 4/4 shuffle. By the way--a word to all you drummers out there in music land. Most of you guys turn a good old 4/4 Texas shuffle into a swing tune. I've had that done to me on most of the steel shows I play. I can even take a drummer out to the car and play a Texas 4/4 shuffle CD for him to listen to. Then I ask, "Can you play drums for me like THAT?" Every time they say, "Oh Yes". Then when we go on stage, the drummer turns every 4/4 Texas shuffle I try to play into a swing. It makes me feel helpless.

Keith,
This year's flu bug seems to hang on longer than the normal week to 10 days. I'm on the tail end of it and it started two months ago. Baby Boomer Bug?
I'm sure Jeanne would be up for whatever you decide.

This looks like it is going to be the best show we have had yet here at Marshfield.

I try to schedule this show where it does not conflict with othe shows such Tulsa, Siloam Springs and Branson, etc.

Though this is only our 3rd year here to have a show and we don't have all the big names here, these guys can all play very well. The backup players like the steel players here have all paid their dues. They have played Nashville, Texas Shows, Vegas and when Branson was still a dust bowl. I am aging myself but I can remember those days too.

At Marshfield, we do not try to compete with other steel shows and it would be silly to try and do so, because every steel show I have ever attended or played at were all different. We see a few faniliar faces and new ones at each of the steel shows. For example, I heard some new players and players that I had never heard before at the Mount Vernon, IL show last month and I was very impressed. Players like Cowboy Eddie Long, an 19 year kid named Eddy Dunlap and both were terrific.

I hope all of you can make it to this year's 3rd Marshfield Steel Guitar Show.

Keith we are taking no hostages! ;-)

Here is a schedule of the confirmed players and times for 3rd Annual Marshfield Steel Guitar and Country Music Show:

I hope this works out for everyone it is quite a job putting together a time schedule, because some people have to play other shows that evening and travel some distance to play. I done the best that I could with the schedule. I apologize if this doesn't workout for anyone.

Also if this schedule doesn't workout for you, or for some reason you can't make it let me know, as we have several others who want to play and couldn't get them on this year's show.

Please realize that as we setup two players, and move players on and off we loose alittle time here and there throughout the day. So I just put it on the half hours for something to go by. It will average out by the end of the day. Remember, 100 years from now will it make a difference. ;-)

10:00 - 10:30 Jimmy Sentlinger & Star Spangled Banner Opening of the Show
10:30 -11:00 Rob Parker
11:00-11:30 Jimmy Burrell
11:30- 12:00 Jerry Roller
12:00- 12:30 J.D. Walters
12:30- 1:00 Terry Wood
1:00-1:30 Presentation of Awards
1:30-2:00 Mr. DeWitt "Scotty" Scott
2:00- 2:30 Russ Hicks
2:30- 3:00 Dennis Detweiler & Jeannie
3:00- 3:30 Mike McGhee
3:30- 4:00 Scotty Henderson
4:00-4:30 Pastor Cliff Waterman
4:30-5:00 Internission

6:00- 6:30 Larry Baker and Jean DeVore
6:30- 7:00 Keith Hilton
7:00- 7:30 Hank Ruf
7:30- 8:00 Jack Musgrave
Around 8:30 Closing of the Marshfield Show

Thanks hope to see you all on June the 7th at the 3rd Annual Marshfield Steel Guitar Show!

Here's alittle quote for you all, I liked it

"When you talk, choose the very same words that you would use if Jesus were looking over your shoulder. Because He is."

GOD bless you all!

Terry, I want to help you. If you need to change my play time, due to a cancelation just let me know. This is a dig I want Scott to read--Scotty--I hope you don't leave at 2:01--one minute after you finish playing. Stick around a while, I guarantee you will see some exciting stuff. Your friend Keith
