BC Pedal Steel Guitar Jamboree - 5 May 2002

A British Columbia jamboree will be held on the 5th of May 2002 from 9AM to 11PM in Okanagan Falls, BC. Al Brisco from Toronto is confirmed to attend and will be conducting a workshop on the 4th. See my website below to see all the information.

All steelers and fans of the steel are welcome to attend. It should be a fun event.

Hi Don, nice site, sounds like the jam will be alot of fun.Looks like I will be able to make it.I have been playing every weekend for quite a while but I will make it up there some how.(Can't complain!)Can you give any info on getting through the border with instruments? any problem? re: the border thing, I don't know the U.S. specifics but here in Canada if taking instruments, cameras etc. across the line we can register these types of high value items on a card that is stamped and validated so when crossing back into Canada there is a record indicating you had these in your possession when entering. I suppose a bill of sale wouldn't hurt either.

Who knows, you may get to do an impromptu gig for all the border guards, after they have you set up your steel and you explain to them that it is actually a musical instrument and not an agricultural implement of some sort

I have taken my steel across the border several times. They are only concerned if you are going to be playing for money, make sure that you tell them that you are only going to play for fun. I have a small customs card which lists all my music equipment and serial numbers to make it easier for me to bring back my instruments into Canada after visiting the USA. I will check at the US border in a week and see what the procedure is if any for US visitors into Canada.

here's some info from the U.S. Customs Service Website

Items such as watches, cameras, compact disc players, or other articles which may be readily identified by a permanently affixed serial number or marking, may be taken to the Customs office nearest you and registered before your departure. The Certificate of Registration (CF 4457) that you will be given will expedite the free entry of these items when you return. Keep the certificate as it is valid for as long as you own the article(s).

I am looking for a photograph of a D10 in silhouette form that I can use to print on T-shits for the upcoming BC steel guitar jamboree. The supplier tells me that a JPG photo is too jagged. Any ideas other than taking my steel in to have it photographed?

Report on the JAM

There was a great jam last night at the Legion with Scott Gamble on drums, Faron Stopsen on Bass, Gary Cooper on Lead guitar, Len Ryder and Bruce Hamilton on steel and kevin Kienlein on violin. Lots of vocalists and it will be repeated tonight before the big day tomorrow.

Al Brisco is busy repairing and adjusting steel guitars this morning and the workshop in on this afternoon with at least a dozen steelers attending.

Looks like we will have good attendance tomorrow for the main Jamboree with at least 15 pickers participating!

Same scene last night at the legion with 5 steelers jamming including Len Ryder, Al Hilderbrandt, Larry Behm, Dave Burton and one other whose name I didn't catch on steel. Al Brisco also dropped in and various singers and lead guitarists. Didn't have time to stay too long as I had to setup for the main JAM. Will try to post some pictures later.

I'll second that!! It was a real hoot meeting many old friends and putting faces on people I have talked to on the phone or seen post on the forum. I can't imagine a better organized event than this. Don my hat is off to you.

This was my first steel gathering ever and let it be known that it won't be my last.

I was over the moon with the playing abilities of all concerned - the atmosphere was at all times great.

Don - you did a fantastic job at getting it all together over the months. I only hope that someday the guys on the Island here could put a show on even just half as good.

The guys who had their ladies accompany them to the venue were so lucky to have them along - it was nice to meet so many wonderful people to share it all with.

I know the guys that went over from the Island sure made a lot of new friends.

Don & Theresa: Wow, what a great time. Nice people, terrific music, lotsa talent and beautiful country. You REALLY put the event together well. We were overwhelmed by how friendly everyone was. What an honor to be able to meet the renouned Al Briscoe and then, what a panic to have to follow him in the evening. Then-I've got Duane Becker and Larry Behm encouraging and helping me, two guys I admire greatly. I'm still pinching myself. Wow! I can't wait for the next one. This was my first time hearing Jeff Bradshaw-really great player (of course he played a Sierra-hah hah). There were so many talented people there, way too many to mention all of them. Thanks again for all your hard effort and time-YOU DID GREAT.

Al once had to follow Buddy Emmons at the ISCG. Al jokes that Buddy was his opening act. You can say Al was yours.
