New CD project in the works - 'Hendrix on steel & slide'

I've finally started working on a new CD, and this will be a very special project, a "Hendrix on steel & slide" tribute thing.

For those of you who are interested, I'll be posting new songs as track #4 on my MySpace player as I finish them, each new replacing the old one (obviously).

First up is my interpretation of "I Don't Live Today", and if I can keep my schedule I plan to finish 1 track every second week...

Hope you'll enjoy them and if not, well, that's life.. ;-)

Fantastic. That's exactly the sort of direction I want to take my playing, once I get my stick up and running. "Day of the Eagle" by Robin Trower is at the top of my list, along with a bunch of newer music.

That was smokin' Steiner. If that's any indication of what that CD will be like, it's gonna be huge.

Are you playing all the instruments? Those drums have to be real, as I can't imagine any drum machine being that realistic sounding. Also, your tones (not to mention feel and licks) are great. What guitars were you using for that recording?

Thanks everybody, your comments are much appreciated and a great 'moral booster' since this project must be among the scariest stuff I've done musically. I mean, it's Jimi........ :alien:

Todd,- yes, I'm playing all instruments, including drum programming. The plugin and sample collection I use for drums is called DFH-Superior and is an amazing tool. When I bounce the MIDI tracks to audio I get the tracks laid out just as I would with live drums, including mic leakage and room ambience. The package comes with 35 gigabytes of samples (!!!), and that's only single hits, no loops. You can check it out here if you're curious - http://www.toontrack.com/dfh_superior.asp (the current version is discontinued but they will soon introduce version 2).

I used my Lazy River weissenborn for the first part, tuned to D, the riffs on the second part is my Epiphone Les Paul, and the fills and solos is my Asher EH Junior, also tuned to D. The bass is a fretless Fender Jazz bass.

Steinar,
So many people have covered Hendix over the years that very few sound interesting to me anymore. You, however, have managed to do an original version of a Jimi song that sounds new and exciting. The interaction between the guitars is awesome and the way you include the acoustic is very cool. Like Tod mentioned, your drum programming sounds very realistic.

Great job man!

Wow--that's a bold concept for a CD, but that's an awesome start! Doing covers, especially of legendary performers, is a tricky thing. From a listener's point of view if a performer just copies the original there's not much point. If a performer takes too many creative liberties it can become almost blasphemous.

It's all in the ear of the beholder, obviously, but this and the other covers I've heard you do seem to strike a good balance between making the song your own and respecting the work that came before.

Can't wait to hear more!

I've finished recording the intruments and waiting for a 'guest singer' to do her part. It's one of Norway's leading female jazz singers, and the song is "May This Be Love" - done very naked, just acoustic guitar, weissenborn, and an 'atmospheric' electric guitar. No loud drums or fuzz guitars on this one... :whoa: :wink:

It's taken me so long because I started out with a full "band" arrangement and have gradually stripped it down to its bare bones,- that's where it sounded best..
With a little luck we'll have the vocals done this Saturday, if not I'll just start working on one of the other songs on my list while I wait for her to find some time.
