Just great. This is carrying imitation to a high art form. I can't get over how well the vocal blends come off like the original. Great steel playing. Great everything.

ZBS Rock

Post by Peter Dollard »

Everytime I hear one of those guitars it seems to cut thru the mix like a laser. This surely puts a distinctive tone with the ZB brand. I have heard players and great players use those guitars and thru it all they maintain their distinctive tone. An outstanding sound and group!!!

Hi Steinar,

Great job. Nice of you to mention Egil & Dag also. Question: does 1108 mean the 108th or the 8th ZB? I used to play one in the 70s but got tired of the action and a few other things. However, I've always admired the tone, especially of the early ones.

Joe

Oh, and tell the singer that Buck used to smile ocassionally, especially when Don Rich would make a face at him!

Hi Steinar. I suspect you are all tuned a semi tone down , I have not checked but I think you might?
Fantastic and a great name for a band, Let me tell everyone what a wonderful country Norway is and the same goes the the people. I have had the pleasure of playing there , but very long trips between gigs. Our Swedish agent used to tell us to get at 7.00 and have breakfast then get on the road you should arrive at the next gig about 7.00 pm, this was in the winter and very cold,

Hi John,

Post by steinar »

Thanks for your comment.
We were not tuned down 1/2 at the time of the shooting of this video, but we are now. Since Buck and the Buckaroos were during the 60`ties, there just was no other way!
And certainly, the high harmonies, the tele and the steel are all so much better off because of that.
Yeah, distances in Norway can be long and ardeous because of mountain crossings.
However, I´m glad to hear that you even so enjoyed your visit over here.
Take care and thanks,

Steinar

steinar, Do you know if the Mississippi bar is still going in Trondheim, we spent two weeks there, one week on our way up as far as you can go in Norway and a week on the way back. There was an Irish guy who played there and he taught us "Meet me in Stockholm" by Doug Sahm.

Joe, its the 108th ZB. There are not many of those original Zane Beck ZB's left out of the 170 that were originally built. They can be adjusted to play beautifully by someone who knows what they are doing like Greg Jones or Billy Knowles.

Hey Kevin,

Did all those Zane Beck ZBs have that old "rocking" logo (the first logo), or did it change early on. I think my old ZB was from Phoenix.

The logo changed once in Bakersfield to the distinct Bakersfield logo in 69, then again later in 70 or 71 in Phoenix to the square one. Just a note. Steinar nails those Brumley licks. The majority of that song is played on just the 3 & 5 strings! Its shows you Brumley's genius in simplicity, yet his phrasing is anything but simple or easy to replicate. You can tell that Steinar studied this. Just an excellent tribute.

Steiner, I love the sound you guys have, it's by far one of the best Owen's tributes I've ever seen, you guys have it nailed! Where did you get the outfits? Those are so cool looking. My only other comment would be that I'd have the lead singer playing the red, white, & blue guitar like Buck did and the other guy playing the metal flake Tele. When you do tunes with Don Rich tele licks, does the lead singer do the lead guitar or the other fellow?.

You notice I said Owens Tribute instead of impersonation as that's what you guys have put together, it's a real tribute to one of my personal heroes that you've helped to make his music live on with your great renditions!......JH in Va.

Again, thanks everybody, for your kind words!
And, again, everybody, what you hear is courtesy of Tom Brumley - licks, and - Greg Jones - sound.
Gary Hoetker, I don`t know if the Buck Owns family has heard/seen this, but I understand that the fellows in the Bakersfield Buckaroos have seen this and approve of what they see.
Kevin Hatton, - I know how you feel about the ZB sound, and I do appreciate your comments. Perhaps needless to say, both 1108 and my upcoming 0219, will get a cushioned rest in your custom made split cases, _ which have earned lots of well deserved praise from the whole steel guitar community.
Jerry, your point about how the vocalist should have played the acoustic guitar with the other guitarist playing the tele, is taken.
"Astute observation," and very correct.
The jackets were made in Bangkok, Thailand. I brought a photo of the Buck Owens Carnegie Hall cd cover, - the tailor had a computer scan the picture and program a sewing machine emulating the patterns, the rhinestones were bought in good ole U.S., and voila, Nudie facsimile jackets.
So, guys, if the steel playing were half as good as the tailor work, it really would be something!
Again, thanks everyone, - Buck, Tom and their music is alive and kickin`over here in Norway!

I am amazed. That has to be one of the best I've seen. He has all of Buck's little nuances down pat.... The slight movement of his head as he sings, et al.

Excellent !!!!!

No wonder Tom is impressed. I've heard many people try to take off Buck's vocals but this guy has it nailed perfectly. Amazing.

If only all tribute bands were this accurate.

Tribute to Buck and the Buckaroos.

Post by steinar »

To receive encouragement from The Man Himself - steel legend Tom Brumley - is for a Buck Owens and the Buckaroos tribute band sort of akin to getting a visit by Moses coming off the mountain!
Tom`s playing inspires other steel stars, and it`s so very indicative of his magnanimous nature, that he encourages rank amateurs - including a fairly mediocre steel player - like us.
We thank you for your kindness, and if we haven`t studied you and the Buckaroos enough, rest assured that the Ranch Shows videos now will be worn ragged!

And to all of you who also offered encouragement and positive advice, thank you ever so much. We never thought that this video would attract so much attention, and we`re overwhelmed and so very grateful for the response.

In the end, this only goes to show that what Tom, Buck, Don, Doyle, and Willie did during their years together, continues to live on in the hearts and minds of both steel players and other country fans alike.

With many thanks from two overwhelmed Norwegian,

Odd & Steinar.

ps. If you want to experience Tom Brumley himself(and who wouldn`t?!), go see the new show opening up in San Antonio late this spring /early summer. It`s going to be an all star cast of musicians playing good ole classic country, and Tom himself will be handling the steel work!
