Lloyd Green on Lawrence Welk

Being a fan a great musicians and songs from the past, I DVR the Lawrence Welk show which airs here on PBS in SW Florida every Saturday evening. This week Charley Pride was on accompanied by Lloyd Green on pedal steel. Charley sang the Hand Williams tune Lovesick Blues. I believe the show was filmed in 1967. What a pleasant surprize and a priceless performance.

A funny detail: Lawrence Welk thought that Charley and Lloyd were a duo!

Ernie-That is what I meant. He was a young fellow.In 1967 I was 46 years old and had been playing Pedal steel for 20 years. So naturally, Lloyd looked real young to me, then.
But he sure became a great player, with Technique, Feeling, Tone and Originality....al.

At one time there were two video's up on You Tube of two songs that Charley and Lloyd played on Lawrence Welk. I was trying to find them recently and they don't seem to be around anymore. I was able to see them before they disappeared - nice.

I'm surprised nobody has mentioned that the guitar was a D-10 (although in '67 there was no such thing as an LDG single neck). I guess it was a ShoBud? Al -- did you notice? Looked almost like an MSA fretboard and didn't really look like ShoBud endplates. Anybody know? The brand decal was near the top edge of the guitar instead of centered top to bottom like most ShoBuds I've seen.

The second song they did was 'Just Between You and Me'. I always liked that song on the Live @ Panther Hall album. They were/are a great combination. Charlie Pride is a truly great singer.

That's probably either a Sho-Bud Fingertip, or the Baldwin Sho-Bud before he had the back neck removed. It's been a while since I saw the video, so I'm not sure.

I think it's the Baldwin. It's bright green stained maple. Pretty guitar.

Larry-Hi, nice to hear from you. It looked like a Baldwin to me too. They came out around 1966-67 so he could have got one of the first ones.I was thinking about getting one then, as the music store in Santa Rosa where I was teaching guitar, handled Baldwin but instead got a MSA D12...al.

I managed to find Lovesick Blues with Lloyd and Charley on You Tube. So far, this is all I can find. The changer kind of looks like a Fingertip model. I think I've seen that one on Lloyd's record album covers before. Kind of a green sunburst. Pretty guitar. Sho-Bud for sure, though.

fingertip model. I have the album where he is pictured with the same guitar on the cover. He is standing with the steel in front of him. Kind of a "fluke", this aired on Welk again as we were doing our Hank Williams Tribute show here in Albert Lea. Yes, it was a huge success.

There was a few bobbles on the bass in that tune. Around time marker 1:09-1:14 there wss some uncertain fishing going on and then again around 1:99. But the steel and vocals were flawless!!! Great stuff...

Here is Just Between You and Me. Did anyone notice the blackface Fender Twin in the background? The burst color of the Sho~Bud looks similar (but darker than) the Show Pro that Lloyd sometimes plays. Cool stuff.

I met Lloyd Green at the steel guitar convention in St. Louis in 1990. What a Guy! He'll talk to you like he's known you all his life. The "Live At Panther Hall" album was about 23 years old at that time. My two favorites are also "Just Between You And Me" and "Kawliga" as far as the pickin' goes, but, the whole album is just loaded up with awesome steel.
