Two questions

Post by Ted Solesky »

Hi, first question. Since most of us drive home late at night, I saw a device that suppose to warn the deers that you're coming so they don't run across the road and cause havic. The device was in a store and it's the size of your finger. You attach it in the front area of your truck or car. Has anyone tried it or know that it is a helpful device?I do see quite a few deer at night when driving home. Number two question. The trouble I've had, since January, and have mentioned it on this forum, and I just found out, is carpal tunnel. The doc said I need surgery. Has anyone here had it? Do you come back to normal after surgery? Presently, it feels like a 10lb open book on each hand. A bad feeling when trying to go for a lick. Ted

Drive with your lights off and you won't see these things.

Good suggestions? Heard the doc slapped your mother when you were born.

surgery

Post by David Thornhill »

Ted, After playing the guitar for Loretta Lynn for almost 30 years, plus driving bus all that time I had to have carpul tunnel surgery on my left hand. I woke up while the doctor was cutting on my hand. This wasn't a very plesant event. It took 3 or 4 months before I could play up to par. My hand stayed sore for over a year. After 4 years the palm of my hand is still tender. I lost some muscle mass in my left thumb. E-mail me if you want more detail Dave Thornhill

I live in San Antonio, Texas and travel nights to meetings and when I was working on the railroad my jobs were usually at night. I used the deer alerts for 12 or 14 years on my vehicles and did not have a problem with hitting deer at night. That is not to say if one is in the road and he hears that ultra high frequency, he is going to raise his head and look at you as you swerve trying to miss him.
The only car I haven't put them on is my present one and a deer ran into the side of it at 5:30 pm in Seguin on my way to a wedding. I've got them on it now...

The heck with the deer, I say. When I'm drivin' home at 2am after a gig, I need something to let the OTHER DRIVERS know I'm comin'! :whoa:

Ted, I use the deer alerts and have not had any problems with deer but, when I bought another car I hit a deer before I put them on it so when I got them damage repaired I put them on and have no problems, so they must work. I've had carpal tunnel surgery on my right hand a few years back and I didn't let get too bad. I wore a half cast or splint for 2 days, when they took that off I came home and played. I couldn,t play long fast phrases for a little while but other than that I had no problems.
Don't let it drag on, take care of it before it gets to bad.

I may be wrong but I believe the deer alerts work.
I worked in Dayton TN. a few years back and would travel by a game reserve twice a day. Mostly early in the morning or late at night. I saw deer nearly every day. After a few close calls I put some on the car .Over the next few years I only saw deer at a distance maybe 1 every couple of months and even saw a few turn and go the other way in the distance. It is my understanding that they are sort of like a dog whistle and we can't hear it.

Hi Ted,
Funny you ask. I had them on my vehicle for years and never hit a deer or come close. Bought a new Jeep a few months back and the day after Christmas plowed into 2 deer. Guess what?? I hadn't put them on my new vehicle yet. Bummer huh? I guess they work. Sorry to hear about your carpal tunnel. Hope all gets better and you get back to playing your usual great style.
Take Care,
Wayne

For years I've driven the stretch between Kerrville and San Marcos all hours of night and day. Only came close to hitting a deer once. I do not use the deer whistles. My brother in Kerrville did some body work on a pick up that had hit a deer. It had the alerts on it. So, now my brother calls them deer "callers". I really don't think they work, best thing to do is drive very alertly. Even at 58 I still see deer very well at night.

Deer Warning thingies...........

Post by Ray Montee (RIP) »

We used to drive extensively at NIGHT, in the BIG RIGS.....and always had the warning gizmo's attached. Never had a problem throughout Montana, Idaho, Washington or Oregon.
One night, a couple of years ago, in a rig not so equipped, a large Elk cow ran out across the freeway, hopped the Jersey barriers in the middle and I nailed her. Surprising how fast they can cover 150 feet. Whew! It took me a couple of years to erase that terrified look on her face as she looked back at me as she passed beyond the righ front headlight.....just before all nine wheels on the right side ran her over. Terrible experience.

Here's a true story :!: My boss got a new truck and had two of the deer warning devices installed on the front bumper. He hit TWO deer and tore up the right door and front fender.

Hi Ted...in answer to your question about "Animal Alerts"...yes they do work...down in Australia I rode motorcycles...Kawasaki GTL 1000 and a Yamaha V-Star 1100...I had 3 of those things on the bikes and I reckon they work because I never even had a close call after installing them...mainly against kangaroos but they work well for deer too....dunno about Moose though lol.

Good luck on your Carpal.

On the "Deer Repellent" whistles.

Just make sure you don't mount them back'erds.

It attracts them..

In Montana the singer I worked with had those things on his van. He hit three deer with them on. I don't believe they work.

deer whistles

Post by james sluder »

Deer whistles that work by air flow at certain speeds do not work very well..for instance if your running into the wind it changes the speeds that they might work at..[ common sence ]..i have tried them since we have so many deer here in ne,tenn..

There is one on the market that is electronic wired into your electric system that works at any speeds.even sitting parked..check them out on the web.
