Skewed Icons, all of a sudden

Post by Chip Fossa »

I have no clue how this happened, but 6-7 icons on my desktop, and all of them in the upper half of my startup menu, are all out of wack.

Some have changed from odd shaped icons to having a box around them (a square). The bottom part of this box has the top part of other icons on the desktop.
Like CD Drive has part of BIAB on it's bottom side.
Google Earth is now Google Cube.

I tried two successful restore points, but those did not bring back the original icons. Some I can go in 'properties' and get the icon back, but others, like My Computer, I can't find a place to change the icon; and I have no clue how to rstore the ones in the startup menu.

I'd like to be able to fix them all in one fell swoop, if possible.

Thanks all.

Chip;
Reboot your computer. This may fix the icon display problems. If not, turn off the computer for a minute, then power it back on and reboot.

Tweak UI is a free program that restores your icons, if rebooting won't.Simple search will get it. JP

Thanks Wiz and Jim.

I tried the reboot, but that didn't help.

And I do have Tweak UI - but I haven't tried it yet.

I'm just getting in tonight, a bit tired, but I'll definitely give her a go. When I'm more in tune.

Thanks fellas.

change the screen resolution to a different value (say 640 x 480) and colours to 256. Then I changed them back to the old values.

Thanks John,

I'll give that a try, too.

I just went and changed the resolution to the lowest settings I could find and when I clicked 'apply' a flag popped up and asked me if I wanted to keep these new settings.

Before I could hit the 'yes' box, I saw a timer running down in seconds and saying "reverting back", and POOF - it went back to my original settings, but the icons all cleared up.

Thank you one and all; that was almost too easy.

What happened when Chip changed his monitor resolution was that Windows flushed out the icon cache, so it could resize all the desktop icons. When he failed to accept the new resolution the display reverted to the previous icon sizes, and importantly, it rebuilt them.
