I hate it when a lead instrument feels it necessary to fill every void with some riff. 'round here, it's the keyboard that everyone thinks is necessary tp complete the band. They're always in the P.A. even if the other instruments are not and dink ad nauseum the entire night.
It's like hittin' yourself in the head with a hammer...it feels so good when you stop. That's why the times you get to play with real musicians are so fulfilling. Gimme an average picker who is willing to work with others over an overachiever anytime. You wanna be a virtuoso? better make sure you're up to it!
Most of my gigs pay the same if you play a lot or a little. I let the glory hogs have it and try to play tastefully no matter what anyone else does.

this past weekend, when I felt the need, I picked up the Strat and played louder than the other Guitar player.
I had a bigger amp, a Session 400, if I was playing thru a Nashville 112 I couldn't have done that..
might as well change course here a little bit...
My guitar playing buddy looked at me, looked at the amp, looked back at me and said..
Man that things a Beast..
and I said..
You ain't heard nuthin' yet, wait till I turn it on !

Here is a video of what I think every player can relate to that knows when to play and when not to play.....notice that no one steps on anyone's part in the tune....the drummer and bass player is right in the groove, the fiddles and Steel couldn't play any better than they are here......it is a study for those who would like to be better players in my opinion. The Time Jumpers are the real deal!

Yes, I believe so. Certainly the jazz people I have played occasionals with. My buddy Dave Klein and his wife Diane are two of the scariest musicians you will ever see, no joke. I think Dave had to work hard to stay under the radar - he plied his craft around the SF Bay area from the late 50s through the mid-80s, then came home to PA, not far from here. They moved to the Pittsburgh area a few years ago - I don't see 'em anywhere near enough now.Just curious... Has anyone ever had the pleasure of playing in a band without a bad musician?
But there are others also.

Yup, that's Dave. He bought that '58 Les Paul Custom new, and has been playing it all these years. I play through his '69 Dual Showman Reverb head that he finally got tired of hauling around. I believe he also bought that new. Best sounding jazz guitar amp I've ever heard. Great for PSG too.
I don't know when you knew Dave, but I first saw him right when I moved here to Central PA in the late 80s, so he was a very well developed jazz player by this point. My jaw just dropped, and I've seen lots of great guitar players. I talked him into teaching jazz guitar up our way - first in the late 80s, and then in the late 90s again. He'd do it for 6 months or a year at a crack. At first, he would work through things while I'd furiously notate and/or tape everything as he worked through them, asking questions as we went through them. Later, we just played. I have enough stuff to keep me busy for years, if I ever get off this pedal steel kick (his words).

Great player...I took some lessons from him around 1970 or so..(memory fails)He was a great teacher as well.
If you can get a hold of him, let him know that the "GREAT" player (and owner of the music store he taught at) Bud Dimock passed away about 6 months or so ago here in Chandler AZ.
Thanx...also thanx for bringing to mind my recollections of Dave.

To answer the OP question.. yes .. EVERY single time I have ever played a gig, there was an awful, talentless, tasteless, toneless, timeless, loud, obnoxious hack artist in the band...at least thats what the other guys in the band always said when we were done... I wonder who they were talking about???... bob

Who hasn't played with a lousy musician at one time or another? There was a girl fiddle player that used to come to jam sessions a few years ago. She played well but would never rest. Once I wound up working a set with her. We were playing in "A" and she played constantly. Finally the rest of us went to "Bb". She finally got a well deserved rest and the rest of us got a chance. Merry Christmas everyone, Ron
