Who is Doug Liningston ?

Well I'm confused as to exactly who he is, maybe it's a "Nom de plume" for tax reasons..

he's this weird guy that keeps following us around, leering,rubbing his nose and then wiping it on his ragged trenchcoat...

actually he is a very talented dude and I remember first hearing him decades ago with Fools Gold, and he was terrific even way back then.....

I have been looking for that cd and just bought it..!!!

Doug is one my heroes and I am also proud to call and consider him a friend of mine.

Doug (Earnest) is one of the most highly skilled, talented pedal steel players out there and not even under rated. He just has a way of keeping a low profile and fly’s under the radar. But, has played on some of the most influential pieces and/or programs out there that most people would recognize.

Doug is also a multi instrumentalist, keys, steel, etc...

When I was working with Bill Lawrence I had the pleasure of watching Doug, site read and play a classical piece on the S-12 Pedal Steel and execute it flawlessly.
Check him out and his work when you get a chance. I promise it will bring smile to your face.

Then, correspond with him and get to know him and you will find a wit and humor and is definitely "right brain".

But, then again that is the stuff that I find hilarious anyway.

Doug is one of my heroes, too - and he also plays a mean bassoon, with a special mute.

I'm pretty sure that he's from another planet, and I mean that in the best possible way....

Baz, I just posted an adorable recent photo of my captivating Sho-Bud D-12 and self in Ken Byng's thread about ShoBud D12. Come to think of it, that was the guitar I played on that Sasha Matson recording.

Doug played at the Arizona Steel Guitar Association show last January. His song selection was wonderfully eclectic, and largely public domain. He played a piece that J.S. Bach wrote for solo pedal steel* and received a standing ovation.

Doug is one of the top steel players in California. He's also an excellent keyboard player.

"Liningston" is a typo. I have the original release of "Steel Chords" and Doug is properly credited as "Doug Livingston".

*The piece was published for solo violin because the pedal steel hadn't been invented yet. Doug explained that Bach actually composed many pieces for pedal steel that were published as though they were written for other instruments, for commercial reasons.

He's one of my heroes, too. He sat in with our band at London's 'Speakeasy' in the '70s while he was in town doing the 'Fools Gold' sessions at Olympic Studios, and he scared this neophyte steel-player almost to death!

Don't forget yet another of his many credits - the soundtrack of 'Ray', the Oscar-winning Ray Charles biopic.

Theresa and I watched a documentary entitled, "Cowboy Del Amor", last night, and Doug's playing was very predominant in the soundtrack. His name was even listed in the credits.

A very nice guy - Invited me out to a low-key gig at a local Harley dealership he was playing with a local band; showed me all the tricks on his GFI as I'd just gotten my Ultra, and got me dialed in on playing "Hotel California" - even though I use a totally different tuning and copedent he got the basic idea of a steel approach ingrained in my brain.

The GFI he was playing had one "normal" neck (with some interesting changes on it, ), and the front neck had a fretted guitar "Thumbs Carlisle"-style neck. Really cool idea. Made me feel very welcome and was really helpful.

Doug is going to appear at the SWSGA show in Phoenix on January 24, 25 and 26th. He is an awesome player and if you get the chance to see him....don't miss it.

Not every steeler gets to do a
Bette Midler Christmas album for sure.

When he plays that Bassoon,
the 'special mute' stands there
and holds the music for him.
The old page turner kept trying to
sing to the Handel pieces
and would throw off the flute players.
