*Lord, I cried today cause a friend left to be with you. But I understand, it's what he was meant to do. Enjoy him there in heaven as we did here on Earth, his presence made us richer, for whatever it is worth. John Hughey was an angel, and I know what angels are, but this one inspired me to play, the Pedal Steel Guitar. - Jim Walker

I had the wonderful opportunity to meet John at the DSSGA. What a wonderful man and his wife Jean too.
John was truely a shining Light in the way he lived his life. You could tell he enjoyed life in the way God planned it. The family will be on my prayer list. May we all learn from the way John lived his life and may the Lord comfort his family and friends.
Yes, the smile and the music will live forever. God Bless.

doesn't seem like this is real to me...my heart is sad...he was one, of a special group of players...a player that gave the vocalist and distinctive and unique sound to their recordings...when you heard john kick off a song...you knew it was john hughey and you knew it was a conway twitty record...rest in peace, john...

We are shocked and saddened by the passing of John. We just visited him on Monday, November 12 and enjoyed over 2 hours of his beautiful music. He was such an outstanding person and musician and we will miss him so much. He was one of my mentors and I treasure the times we have met and enjoyed his music. His music will always be cherished by the steel guitar community. Jean, you and your family are in our prayers.

Truly a great legend and also a Gentleman indeed, was John Hughey. Only back in September of this year I was honoured to be in his presence at the Station Inn in Nashville TN and all I could say was WOW what a player and what a lovely man he was, even though he was playing with the Time Jumpers, John had time for me and I will never forget his masterly playing on the C6th and E9th and also the kindness and interest that he afforded me that night. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family at this sad time and john may you rest in piece and be playing that beautiful crying steel guitar with the angels(as only you could John).

I heard this sad news last night, but have been out of touch with my computer. This is a very sad and tragic day for the steel guitar, and music world.
Mr. John has been a dear friend for over 45 years..I have been priveleged to share his bandstand many, many times.
He was one of my hero's, and a very dear friend.
My condolences, and my expressions of love, and prayers go to Miss Jean and all the family, and his family of friends .
May our Blessed Savior wrap each of them in His wondrous, and healing love, and soothe their aching hearts, and bring to them peace and understanding.
Rest in eternal peace my friend..

I'm going to put this in my Stories forum as well, but... I remember hearing about Vince Gill talking about the first date that John played for him and Vince started getting John's gear out of the bay. John told him he would get it, after all he was Vince Gill. Vince said "No, YOU'RE John Hughey and I'll carry your bags!"
