Jim Cohen with Beats Walkin', Media, PA, Oct 20

Post by Jim Cohen »

My western swing band, BEATS WALKIN' will be appearing on Sat., October 20th, as part of the Media Jazz-by-Night Festival, in (where else?) Media, PA.

In this great one-night festival, all the clubs and restaurants in Media will have a different jazz group in them, and one ticket buys you access to all of them! We will be at the Plumstead Inn, starting at 8:15pm. Other venues will have the great Bootsie Barnes, Charles Fambrough, Denise King, Stephen Wrembel's gypsy jazz guitar, and others, some come on out for a really Large Time!

More details of the festival are available at www.MediaJazzbyNight.com

We hope to see you there for a rollicking time of Beats Walkin's special brand of Bop-a-billy Swing!

Ah-haaaaah!

Wendi Bourne, vocals and guitar
Jim Cohen, pedal steel guitar

Hey, listen up fellow steel guitar members. Especially you members from the Tri State area. For you members who have never heard or seen Jim Cohen play steel guitar,I would greatly advise you to do so. Not only is he a GREAT player, but one helluva human being. His playing is top notch and I will tell you I have been following him for years on his playing and as great as his playing is, he always seems to play better year after year. His band is one of the best in the Tri State area and one of VERY few in the Philly area. They are a great sounding band, believe me, you will not be dissapointed when you hear this group. Jim I believe also teaches steel guitar in the Elkins Park area. Lets get out and see this band with a GREAT Steel Guitar Player and the best in this area since George Edwards of the Philly area. Jim also plays all over the world featuring many different styles of steel guitar music and I might add with great knowledge and authority with this truly great instrument. Go get em Jimbo! I am going to try real hard to get out and see you as since I have opened up my own business, it has been so, so busy. Keep up that great pickin! Neal

Jim,
My wife and I will try to make it there. Not a long trip from beautiful Lancaster County. And I want her to hear some good swing music, which was always my favorite to play. I hope that we will get a chance to talk a bit.

I second what Neal said. Jim is a world class jazz steeler. And the Media festival is always fun. Unfortunately, I'm playing elsewhere this year.

Dan, if you want to hear some blues steel, I'm playing Thurs. 10/11 with the Philadelphia Blues Messengers out in the Northwestern suburbs at The Blue Sky, just past Swede Road (202) on Germantown Pike. Not nearly up to Jim's level, but we have a good time.

Good luck with that gig, Jim. I know right where Media is. My cousin used to live there.

Now, if you were to arrange for me to play 18 or 36 holes at Marion CC I would be willing to make the trip from Cincy. :D

David,

sounds like fun, but I'll probably just be rolling into town (Ardmore, actually) around 11 after driving all afternoon and evening, so I might be to tired to hack it. Any gigs on Friday or Saturday?

Bump. Gig is tomorrow night. Hope to see some of you there. Dan, it would be fun to see you there but understandable if you're driving in so late. But sorry, no gigs Friday or Saturday during the day, just Sat. eve.

Ha! i googled for directions and found this assessment of the venue:

" "Fair Food at Fair Prices Don't expect to find anything remotely healthy at this place. It is a local restaurant/bar that tends to get very smoky, loud and is great fun. The menu has primarily comfort-food ...""

I don't know how many of you know that, with the release of his last album called "Country Ballads" Jim moved UP from jazz to country music. 8)

Oh, we had a large time! That was a lot of fun, the crowd was really into it. We had the great Ken Smith (maker of the famed Ken Smith basses, played by Ben Brogdon and many other top players) on upright bass, and Man! That cat swings! Lynn Riley on saxomophone, Wendi on vocals and guitar, Chuckie on drums and just being a character, and me trying to hold it all together in real time. A great evening. Thanks to Forumite Jack Stanton for stopping by to catch the 3rd set. Hadn't seen Jack in years, since his stint with 'Diamondback'. Good to see ya Jack!

Best to all,

Jim,
Great seeing you again, too. That's quite a snappy little combo you've got there! Enjoyed your playing, as always. You made that new MSA sound good.
Maybe it won't be 10 years again 'till the next time!

Hey Jack, nice to see you are out and about again.
I remember the seminars we took years ago at the PSGA shows and then the sets you did with your great band back then.
Maybe we'll catch up with eachother again someday.
Jim good to hear your band is out there clicking.

Also a Zum D10, a Mullen RP, and a restored Rose S10, named the "Blue Bird". Also, I have acquired and restored the plexiglass D10 MSA Classic that was built as a demo in the early '70s.
