TV: Steel Guitar Segment on "How it's made"

Post by Jack Stoner »

I got the following from Ollie and Rae Strong. It's a segment on the Fulawka steel guitar and then a short demo of the guitar played by Ollie Strong. It airs on the Science channel.

"We have just had word that the segement of "How to make a Steel Guitar" will be aired on October 30th 2007 at 8:30 p.m. ET. Ollie will be demonstrating the steel and of course Eddie Fulawka will be making one .
It's a very short segment but well put together. Thanks Rae and Ollie Strong"

Ollie is a very soulful player and a kind gentleman who is very generous with his considerable knowledge,
and Ed is a master craftsman when it comes to steel guitars.
I hope they run this program up here in Alberta.

Well, I just found out that the science channel is not included in our cable TV package.
What a bummer.

Al, I know what you mean. We hardly ever turn the TV on except when the grandkids are over. Then it's mostly on the Disney channel. Not much geared for us older folks anymore.

Science Channel is 284 on DirecTV, if that's in whatever package you have with them.

Glad to know there's more on that show than how guitar strings are made (all due respect to D'Addario)--nothing there I hadn't seen in more fascinating detail elsewhere.

There was an episode some time ago about how guitar strings were made but I missed it several times. I keep thinking there will be a "How It's Made" marathon one of these weeknds and I catch it. We'll see. Hope I don't miss this one.

The "How It's Made" program in the Tampa Bay area is shown every evening on the Discovery channel from 6-7PM. Look for it there in your area.

I saw this show last night, it didn't show much about "How it's made" but it was very obvious in the four minuet clip that the Fulaka steel guitar IS a very high quality unit and it is obvious that Eddie is a craftsman that does most all of the manufacturing work himself , with his own hands.
The clip was WAY to short but of very high quality, even though it was appearent that the announcer was pretty ignorant about the guitar he was watching being built.
Eddie Fulaka is a wonderful guy, a great craftsman and really into quality and perfection, and all this was shown during this "way to short clip".
Yep, I'm a Eddie Fulaka fan, and have been since '82.
Did any of you notice the lever on the back of the guitar he was assembeling? It switched the knees levers from neck to neck, This is a feature that Eddie has been able to do with great quality for many years. I love this feature, ala the Sho-Bud crossover.
Eddie? What a good guy, And I'm happy about the show, it was just to short.

I believe Bobbe thinks the show was a little "short".

Me too.

Yea, I'm starting to think it may have been "Too Short",,,,
Or quite possibly "not long enough" or possibly "more time could have been spent showing more of it", or I feel that the steel portion could have been enlarged, and also---------------------------------------------------------------->

Bobbe,
I will vouch for everything you said about Eddie. I know he is a quality craftsman. I have had the opportunity to peek over his shoulder twice so far, as he crafts his instruments. Eddie is one of a kind in that he makes everything for his steel right there in his garage; everything except the tuning keys and strings.I believe by now he farms out the casting of the pedals. When I saw him in Sept, he had 4 pedal steels on the go. He turned 79 in July.He is unstoppable.
IMHO, here is a giant of a man who has not received enough recognition for his work.

Hey, you guys. Quit chiding Bobbe for his statement. All he said was, "The temporal extent of the sequential elements of the episode was inappropriately succinct to allow full comprehension of the vital segments of the exhibition"
