12 string Roundneck Dobro Info?

Post by Steve Wilson »

My friend is asking what I know about this 12-string dobro on ebay.

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vi ... :B:EF:US:2

I cannot find any info on 12 strings, and the serial number doesn't seem to jive with the info I can find. Any thoughts?

I can say that this appears to be a relatively rare model, probably from the 1960s based on the overall look of it, but I don't know for sure. The best bet is to ask on the Reso-nation forum where people who know more about this type of instrument hang out.

The soundholes on the upper bout are the type used when the Dobro brand belonged to Mosrite in the 60's.

Try the IGS forum too.

Thanks Brad, Colin & Michael,
I will pass this info along to my friend who is watching it on ebay. Has anyone ever heard one of these guitars? Are the Mosrite era instruments sought after or best avoided?
Thanks again!

Steve, I don't know which part of California Morgan Hill is in but there are several people around LA who have those. One is Clark Rohn who plays at the Bellflower Eagles lodge every Friday night and Sunday afternoon, another is Sammy Masters who plays gigs around town. Johnny McKnight in Sand Springs (Tulsa) Oklahoma has one. The late SoCal vocalist Jerry Inman had and used one on a regular basis. They had a very ringing and nice sound on a bandstand for open chord rhythm. When Johnny McKnight did a recording session in the late sixties, he had JayDee Maness playing steel on the tunes. JayDee took six of the strings off of Johnny's Dobro and played some regular barred Dobro things which really sound nice. There were quite a few of those instruments on the SoCal music scene back then..........JH in Va.

The guitar was made by Moserite. I used to have one, but sold it to a collector. I was told that only 50 were made, but I think that's not true. Still, there are not many of them floating around.

I was not satisfied with the way the guitar recorded. The pickup acted as a microphone, picking up room sounds. I suppose it would be OK for a singer/songwriter to use as a rhythm guitar, but I was extremely disappointed in the instrument.

Yep, that Mosrite truss rod cover is a dead giveaway. I have a Mosrite square neck, 6 string Dobro in my collection.

MSA Millennium, Legend, and Studio Pro, Reese's restored Universal Direction guitar, a restored MSA Classic SS, several amps, new and old, and a Kemper Powerhead that I am really liking. Also a Zum D10, a Mullen RP, and a restored Rose S10, named the "Blue Bird". Also, I have acquired and restored the plexiglass D10 MSA Classic that was built as a demo in the early '70s. I also have a '74 lacquer P/P, with wood necks, and a showroom condition Sho-Bud Super Pro.

I don't think that's a Mosrite as they usually had the Mosrite logo on the headstock. Also, every Mosrite Dobro I've ever seen had a zero fret which this one doesn't.............JH in Va.
