Beach Boys/Brian Wilson Music

Post by Brian Herder »

Sorry no steel content, but I thought some of you might be interested in this
anyway. This is from a project we did a few years ago..I'm playing bass,
my son is playing guitars and Dano bass and my brother is leader/guitars,
etc and pretty much put the whole thing together. This was all recorded
live on 40 tracks of ProTools.
The idea was to reproduce live as close as possible,
the recordings of the Beach Boys using the proper instruments with no "ironing
boards". 11 vocalists, and a whole gang of players.

I love it! That's just super. Hey, is that Lynn Riley in the backline on sax and flute? If so, she's an alumna of my band, Beats Walkin'...

Good eye Jim, that is in fact Lynn Riley. It was indeed a lot of fun..it was a really cross-generational performance. The guys playing keyboards/vibes each had kids singing too.

Jim- We did this for 3 shows over July 4th 2004, the again for 5 shows that October. There's some talk about reviving it, but it's a LOT to get together. I'd love to get it rolling again. Playing the bass on those tunes was a good time.
I'll keep you posted.

Brian, thats just oustanding. I've been in those kind of productions. People don't realize the amount of coordination, arrangement and rehearsal it takes to put something like that together. You can see the genious of Brian Wilson. You did a fabtastic job. Very enjoyable. You should "Do It Again".

Thanks guys. You're right about how much work is involved, but it was too much fun at the same time. Kevin, "Do It Again" was among the 40+ tunes we got on video, though I am not sure which are going to be posted next..it's only been 3 years to get started with mixing the stuff down.

Good job! Brian Wilson's music is NOT easy either in terms of skill needed to perform it or the time necessary to put the arrangements together.

Thanks for the nice compliments from everyone. I'd love to hear Chuck's version of God Only Knows. I'm always interested in a good arrangement of a Brian Wilson tune.

Hi Brian,
My version of God Only Knows can be found here: http://www.hsga.org/new_design/ChuckLettes.htm
I used the original backing track, found on the Beach Boys Boxed Set for Pet Sounds. It's always great to find fans of this type of music.

The guy in the maroon shirt and glasses likes like a member of the Austin Lounge Lizards.
Cool stuff.

My cousin gave me a CD of "Al Jardine, family and friends, (with Brian Wilson's daughters) recorded live in Vegas. I think they do a better job than the original band.

For anyone interested, my brother posted a fourth tune on youtube. Let Him Run Wild, a favorite of mine. In case you're wondering, the vocals weren't redone. Each part is doubled, and the lead was always doubled from the "Beach Shack" tiki bar at the side of the stage...unfortunately, we didn't have enough cameras and the co-lead vocalist isn't seen. :\

excellent.
i'd love to be involved in something like this.

Brian's new suite of tunes is really something special. It's called "That Lucky Old Sun", based on the old Smith/Gillespie standard, but features a slew of new songs by Brian. "Midnight's Another Day" is the best song he's written in many years.

here's the opening:

Terrific!!!

Hearing the music dissected and then recreated in this manner is a reminder of just how wonderfully musical the Beach Boys were. Even this old Brit doesn't think the Beatles came close! ...

This is fine work.
