Hey, thanks Jay! Wow, listening to that "thin" Fender pickup sound, it almost has the tone of the Dave Dudley "poping" guitar backings on 6 Days on the Road. What a truely unique and inspirational PSG player! Listen to how melodic his phrases are... just like he's humming 'em out loud, so spontaneous!

Thanks again, made my (lazy) day!

Sneaky Pete for the HOF!

Woodsongs Old Time Radio Hour has an hour long video on their archive page of Burrito Deluxe: show 323. Some great playing by Sneaky Pete. Sure doesn't look comfortable the way he uses his flight case as a seat though.

That'll be on my iPod by tonight - thanks!

That "thin" Fender sound isn't so "thin"...he's almost getting a Strat on position "4" tone.

For those not well-versed in Pete's playing, that's one of the most *mellow* things I've ever heard him do live. Some things are absolutely insane....

I did put it on my iPod - with earbuds there are a lot of subtleties in that video that you can pick up - they're not noticeable with speakers. I must have watched it 20 times!

There have GOT to be more Burritos videos out there...I'd love to find a list and get hold of all of them for personal watching, not distribution.

I feel "left out" because I am not familiar with Sneaky Pete's work. I quit playing (or listening)in 1970, and for the next 14 years missed out on all of the players of the 1970's.

....it sounds like he was a trooper!

Thats got SGHOF written all over it. He is an innovator and not a derivitive. He should have been in long before some of the guys they put in in the last ten years.

Not only an innovator and a guy who blazed his own trail...but a humble one. Pete is one of the nicest, most non self-centered guys you'd ever meet. He spent 30 minutes crawling over and under his guitar with me years ago after a show - when most "name" musicians really don't want to be bothered much. He seemed truly amazed somebody wanted to talk to him and learn about stuff, and always has seemed baffled by accolades...just a "regular guy".

One thing about his playing - after maybe 3 or 4 notes, you KNOW it's him. There are not many musicians in history that are that distinctive.

Does anyone know if Sneaky Pete ever used another steel (not his Fender) for studio work? I went back and listened to some of the early Linda Ronstadt albums and I would almost swear he was playing a different brand of steel, he was getting a more commercial E9 sound, not his "trademark" sound. Of course, that could just be his genius.

I think I remember him having an MSA at one point(?)....but I believe his Ronstadt recordings were done on the Fender.

Buddy Emmons also played on the early Linda Ronstadt albums. Sneaky once told me in the late 1970's that he had been offered all the major brands of steels by the makers, but stuck with his Fender. I also think Sneaky is not the steel player on "Do you know how it feels" on the first Burrito album-nothing about the playing on that track sounds like him or his steel.

That very MSA was soon sold to none other than Dan Dugmore by Sneaky. It was Dan's first steel guitar and Sneaky was Dan's inspiration to play pedal steel. So you can see what a major influence Sneaky Pete was. He should be in the Hall Of Fame.

"Do you know how it feels" is absolutely Sneaky - there's a "signature" lick at the end of the first verse, the closing is for sure his playing, and the tone is Fender all the way. Just dinking around on mine, and the stuff all fits in the B6 tuning. It's mellower than most of his stuff - but it's Pete. No doubt. Besides which, except for the drummer situation this was a "band" - there wouldn't even be a reason to use another steel player.
