Andy Griffith RIP

Post by Michael Breid »

America's favorite sheriff, Andy Griffith passed away this morning at age 86. Thoughts and prayers go out to the Griffith family. Andy was a classic. I guess Jim Nabors and Ron Howard are the only original members left of the Andy Griffith Show. Some of the others like Eleanor Donahue, The Dillards, et. al. came later.

I did not know this: Andy received a degree in music from UNC Chapel Hill.

Martin has been putting out limited edition signature guitars for many years and there was a run of 311 of the Andy Griffith D-18. It was built with a lot of the characteristics of a pre-war D-18. One of very few Martin signature models ever made to honor someone who was not first and foremost a pro muscian.

Obviously he will be remembered mostly as Andy Taylor and to a lesser extent Matlock, but he appeared in a fair number of films, including "No Time For Sergeants" and he occasionally got to make out with hot women like Patricia Neal in "A Face In The Crowd."

He was saddled with the good ol' Andy Taylor image, but once in awhile in films he could play a great S.O.B. If you can ever find on cable the made-for-TV movie from 1974 called "Savages," watch it. Andy plays a great S.O.B. but he does it with an almost Andy Taylor-like countenance. He's got the grin and wit going, with a gleam in his eye. I love it. I've seen it about three times. Maybe with his passing it will get put into some cable or satellite programming since we ahve about 500 channels these days. Here is the description of "Savages" from his filmography:

"Ben Campbell, a 22 year old gas station attendant in a small desert town, is looking to make some extra money. He is surprised when Madec, a wealthy lawyer, asks him to be his guide in a hunting trip in the desert. When Madec accidentally shoots a prospector, he is fearful of what it will do his reputation, and decides to eliminate the only witness, Ben, who is forced to go on the run. In addition to being hunted by Madec, Ben must also contend with the harsh desert elements. But if he does make it back to town alive, will anyone believe his story?"

Andy Griffin also played in a movie "Murder In Coweta County". He played along with Johnny Cash as a 1940's real caractor named John Wallace, who murdered a man who had stolen a cow from him. He would have gotten away with it except the chase wound up in Coweta County just across the line from Meriweather County and That was his undoing.
This was a great movie and based on a true story.

Where Andy and Opie are walking towards their Fishing Hole with the famous whistling, is notin the hils of Mayberry, but at the Franklin Canyon Resevoir just in the Hills above Sunset Blvd. in West Los Angeles, Ca. A lot of Movies have had scenes shot up there. I think ordinarily it is a public recreation area and you can walk the same walk. Don't know if you can fish there or not !

I remember the first time I heard of Andy Griffith. It was back in the 1950s when he came out with the talking comedy record called "What it was, was football". It was funny then, and it's still funny.

I guess Jim Nabors and Ron Howard are the only original members left of the Andy Griffith Show.
Some of the others like Eleanor Donahue, The Dillards, et. al. came later.
Eleanor Donahue first appeared in the 4th show of the shows first season.
She appeared in twelve episodes that season.
Neither Jim Nabors nor The Dillards appear until the third season.

What a great loss it is to lose Andy Griffith. That was a great tv show. I also enjoyed watching Matlock. Also, I have found out many people do know know the Fishing Hole had lyrics. All we heard was the whistling when the show came on.

I'm sure he will be missed. I always like what ever he played in. Untill I got my iphone I had his theme song as my ring tone. Haven't figured out how to put it on this phone yet.
