Digging the Gary Newcomb Trio

Post by Herb Steiner »

My friend Gary Newcomb is creating a niche for steel guitar with his trio that shows me the instrument has a place in music completely separate from the country genre and can be as an effective voice in pop music as the music of Robert Randolph.

Gary plays a 12-string Sierra guitar in B6 Universal tuning and uses it much as a lead guitarist would while backing himself singing his original songs. He's a great player and totally unique in his playing style, which is an effective accompaniment to his evocative singing and lyrics.

I've listened to two complete sets of his music the last couple of weeks and only heard a tune or two that had the remotist connection to anything country or Nashville-based. He uses stomp boxes and the Ebow to great effect, again much like a lead guitarist. His stage presence/persona is ultra-hip, erudite, and comedic in his between-song patter and introductions to the material.

What I'm being overly verbose in saying is that he shows me the steel guitar, in the right hands, can be as intriguing and entertaining as any form of guitar in the world of pop rock. Kudos to you, Gary!

BTW, Gary's trio has been playing the past couple of weeks at Skinny's Ballroom in beautiful downtown Austin Texas, sharing the bill with Bob Hoffnar's jazz steel quartet and Rose Sinclair's Swing Band during Steel Guitar Tuesday. Thanks to Brad at Skinny's for having the cojones to feature the steel guitar regularly in various musical formats on that night. :)

Son, we live in a world with walls, and those walls have to be guarded by men with steel guitars. Who's gonna do it? You? You, Lt. Weinberg?

Thanks, Herb and Bob. It's good to see that Gary's getting the appreciation he so richly deserves. I'll add that in addition to his creative talent, Gary is a great person, too.

Keep on pickin', Gary! You too, Herb and Bob. :D

Hey, my bro! Thanx for those links to Newk's Youtube vids, though I must say that those cuts, being 2 years old, are not representative of the stuff he's doing lately. Much more alt/pop rock is coming from his talented chops nowadays. He and the trio are soon to embark on a national tour, upon which I wish him much success.

Russ, Herb, here's a recent YouTube with Gary and my long-time friend Timmy "Top Cat" Campbell. Timmy was/is Miss Leslie's Juke Jointers drummer.

Thanks for that link. Interesting coincidences, because I've been working with Timmy lately in Carl Hutchens' band, and the song they're covering in the video is a Lazaroff Brothers song.

David Lazaroff was my student back in the day, and his desire to learn swing tunes was the genesis of my Swinging On E9th Vols. 1 and 2 course series. I miss ol' Dave, he was a good student and picker. :)
