Bakersfield Bound

Post by Harold Bullard »

If you’ve never heard the album “Bakersfield Bound” (1996) by Chris Hillman & Herb Pederson, you’re missing out on some exceptional California country (It’s still available on iTunes, Amazon, etc.). I never get tired listening to this album. So, when I had some time on my hands, I decided I’d tab it out. It was a lot of fun learning and playing licks by Jay Dee Maness. This man is something else.

Hoping not to step on any toes, I thought I would share this tab (Jay Dee, I hope you don’t mind). So beginning with this post and continuing with the next 12, is the whole album. I’m not fortunate to have one of those “slow-down the music boxes”, so if you hear something not quite right, you fix it. Some of this material goes by awful quick.

I hope the way I tab makes sense, it makes sense to me.

Thanks, Harold! You obviously put a LOT of work into this. Couldn't agree with you more - Bakersfield Bound is a great CD as are the Desert Rose Band CD's with much the same lineup of musicians. Nice job...

Great information on a greater steel player. Jay Dee does not use the "standard...bad choice of words" knee lever setup. Haven't tried this yet, but I know he uses the RK for the 4th string D# vice the LKR. What copedent did you use in the tab?

That tab uses standard A, B, C pedals.
He uses F to indicate "E's Raise" half step.

This is the most common, but not Jeff's way.

The physical placement of the levers and pedals doesn't matter.

Thanks Joey, I guess it was too early this morning out here and I didn't see it.

Like what Joey said, mine is, I think, the most common or mostly what Jeff Newman used. My setup is kind of a hybrid. It's a cross between an extended E9th and a universal. But for the purpose of these 13 songs .....
A = raises 5 & 10
B = raises 3 & 6
C = raises 4 & 5
D = lowers 2 & 9
E = lowers 4 & 8
F = raises 4 & 8
PF ("Franklin pedal") = lowers 5 & 6
G = raises 1 & 2
X = lowers 5 & 10

and pedals 5, 6, 7 & 8 don't matter.
