Steel Guitar Tunes Of The Week #8 - Speedy & Herbie

Post by Joe Goldmark »

No, not together! Twin steels was last week. Here are two of my favorite slow and soulful cuts by players who are usually associated with hot picking.

Steeler: Speedy West
Tune: Slow & Easy
Album: Guitar Spectacular, Capitol T1835
Year: 1962

Speedy seems to have an E9 pedal (raising 5 to 6) on his rig. A gorgeous tune.

Steeler: Herb Remington
Tune: Sweetnin'
Album: Remington Rides Again, Hilltop M-6020
Year: mid '60s

Herb wrote a wonderful cha cha for us. Enjoy.

And at the end of the day, the steel guitar is all about beauty. Hot licks are great, but the reason that you're reading this now is because sometime in the past you fell in love with the sound of this instrument.

GREAT sounds! I love these. I got to see Herb Remington perform a few years ago... he's in his 80s and his playing is still fantastic.

Guitar Spectacular is my favorite steel guitar record ever. The compositions for the most part are masterpieces. I love Slow and Easy and it really shows what a great composer and player Speedy was in the context of the music.

I did a non-pedal version of Afternoon of a Swan, which I think might be my favorite tune of all. If anyone is interested in hearing it, here's a link:

I love Herbie, too, and I'm looking forward to seeing him in a few weeks in Dallas. His Steel Guitar Holiday is way up on my list of great steel records, too.

I like the pizzicato section on Herb's cha cha a little before the 1-minute mark.

Great tone on these guitars, too. That little bit of string noise makes it real.

Steelin' Moonlight was another great Speedy West Tune. Speedy West wrote so many great Steel Tunes and brought a lot of excitement to the Steel guitar.

Mike, nice version. You must be a glutton for punishment to take pedal tunes and apply them to non-pedal. Anyway, you make it work.
