iTunes won't load except after"Safe Boot" Mac G4 M

Post by Ben Elder »

Headline says it all. Possible reason: a conflict with ProTools 6.4 LE (which is installed but which I really haven't started using yet)??? Unplugging the 001 interface doesn't help. Only after a "Safe Boot (On + CMD + SHIFT) will iTunes actually run. Without a Safe Boot, it shows that it's activated in the [row of icons that pops up from and hides below the screen]. By activated, I mean it shows the small triangle below the iTunes icon, but no iTunes menu at the top of the screen and no iTunes functions are possible. With iTunes >so-called activated< after a NON-Safe Boot, iTunes has to be Force Quit before the G4 can be shut down or restarted.

And something else: even when iTunes is up and visible, it won't play music--not from the library, not from a connected iPod. All I can do is download (podcasts) and manipulate files. (Today has been Deletion Day.)

System Preferences does not recognize or show the system's built-in audio in/out; it only shows Digidesign HW (i.e., the ProTools PCI card).

Didn't we leave this kind of crapidiocy behind in about OS8? I'm running 10.3.9 (on a Dual 1GHz) and was free of this for a while after upgrading from 10.2.8 where I had the same problem (among several others).

It may be worth $1200 to get a g5 refurb (on the other hand, I'd rather have a BMI D-10 if I had that kinda money just lying around) just to run ProTools, etc. on and leave the day-to-day, internet stuff, etc. to the Geezer4...

Several things you can try:

Make sure your version of OSX, including iTunes, is updated.

Move your iTunes .plst
(User/Library/Preferences/com.apple.iTunes.plst) to the desktop or somewhere (in case you want it back) and restart iTunes.

Log in from a different account (create one if you don't already have one) and see if the problem persists.

Do an archive and install from the OSX install disk.

If it's a conflict with ProTools surely there's a forum or discussion group that might help you out. I don't use it, so I can't offer any suggestions. Good luck.
