A friend of mine just sent me a link to a Cincinnati based Western Swing band. Never heard of them before (may have something to do, that I live in Germany ...) but I think they are GREAT: The Midwestern Swing |

My Gooness! I can't believe I live this close to Cincy and not aware of this band. They're terrific. Cameron Cochran is the steel player according to the band bio on their website. Plays real nice pedal and fixed tunings as well.
Any of you forumites around Cincinnati know Cameron?
I must watch for regional appearances from this group. Just wow Thanks Peter! I played all their YT videos. Made my day!
Edit: Just for fun I did a forum search and found a couple posts by Cameron, so he's a member. Great job, great stuff, great band if you're reading this. |

Guitar players Fryer and Myers are just terrific jazz men. I love all those twins and trips and they way they chunk rhythm. Fabulous listening experience. |

Great stuff, love it! Thanks for the heads-up on these guys, glad to get them on my radar, for sure. Plus, I have the utmost respect for a steel player that wears (and actually uses) a fourth finger pick. |

Hi all -
Nick Fryer here from The Midwestern Swing. Thanks for all the kind words and support. We are extremely humbled and grateful to be a part of such a great community of players and fans of the music. You can stay up to date with what is going on with the band at our website (http://www.themidwesternswing.com). If you are in and around the greater Cincinnati area you can catch us live every Wed at Japp's on Main St in the heart of downtown. We are also going to be touring in the New York area next week 2/12-2/15 playing in Rochester, Saratoga Springs and Brooklyn. You can check out some of our videos on Youtube if you search "The Midwestern Swing" and we hope to have a full length recording out sometime soon. Thanks again for all the support!

Cool Nick. Not enough that you play fine guitar, you gotta smoke us on the steel too Just so we can put a face to a name, are you playing the big Guild or the 335?
Good luck on your NY tour and your recording date.
I have a relative near Florence, so I'll be up to see your downtown club show in the near future. Looking forward to hearing the band live.
Been aiming to go by Bobby Mackey's too, so maybe just make a week out of it.
Do you know if Chuck Rich is still playing there? |

I am playing the 335. I am only a beginner on steel but really really love it. The lessons that I offer are not for Steel, more general theory and improvisation that one could apply to any instrument. If someone wanted to learn steel specifically, I am not the guy. Yes, Chuck Rich is playing with Bobby on a regular basis. Look forward to seeing you in Cincinnati! |

Nice playing.
A lot of people learned that version of "Slow Boat to China" from the "Brisbane Bop" cd, but Vance and Jimmy stole that arrangement, pretty much note-for-note from Barney Kessel:

That beautiful long scale Fender string master I have underneath my hands in The Twin Guitar Special video belongs to my mentor and very dear friend Chuck Rich who STILL plays at Bobby Mackey's Western World in Wilder, KY every Friday and Saturday night!!! The name Midwestern Swing is actually taken from a syndicated program he use to play on out of Cincinnati,OH called The Midwestern Hayride. Here is the link to the Twin Guitar Special arrangement we based off of Leon McAuliffe's recorded version with a few tweaks. Cartwright was right on about the Slow Boat arrangement. Thank you so much, everybody.
Sincerely,
Cameron Cochran
