Kansas Born Steel Players

Post by ray qualls »

How many of you steel players out there were born in Kansas? I need to get a list for our club the KSGA.
Info needed:
What town you were born in.
What year you were born.
How long you've been playing.
Who you've played with.
What kind of steel you play.

You can e-mail me personally at rayqualls@embarqmail.com or post on this topic. Thanks, Ray Qualls

I believe the late Danny Shields was born in Kansas. Don't know what town, tho. I'll try to locate his obituary.

Ray:

Here's a link to some info I found in the archives.

http://steelguitarforum.com/Forum15/HTML/004579.html

I couldn't find the obituary that I had. I've filed it somewhere and now can't find it. One of those 'senior' moments.

Maybe someone in the Wichita area knows. Dan passed October 14, 1996 and the forum archives don't go back that far.

Post by Jonathan Neher »

Hi,

I was born in Topeka KS in 1957
Been playing since 1970.
Toured with Elvin Bishop, Clarence "Gatemouth" Brown,
and Kinky Friedman and since 1985 lots of
regional bands around CA and OR.
I played a Franklin D10 for years but just sold it
and bought a D8 Stringmaster and a Carter S10.
I mainly am playing dobro, mandolin, and soprano
sax in my band but will be pulling the steels out
again soon.

Thanks,

Jon Neher

Jack, we inducted Jeff Newman the 2nd year of our show! Fran was so gracious to come here and accept the plaque for him. She's a wonderful lady. Thanks for asking! Ray

Hi Ray, Jon Irsik here. Born in Garden City in 1962, still live here. I played steel for a couple of years in the late 70's and just picked it back up this past December. I've played with regional bands in the SW Kansas area.

I'm currently playing a late 70's/early 80's Sho-Bud LDG.

I know of 4 other steel players in this area and I have a brother who plays as well. He currently lives in Lenexa. I'll see if I can get ahold of them to get their info to you.

Ray,

I was born in Independence, KS in 1948. Started playing lap steel in 1956, dobro in 1976, and finally got my PSG in 1999.

I play a D-10 Emmons Legrande, OMI Dobro, National Tri-cone, and a 1939 Mastertone lap steel.
