How are you set up? What equipment do you use?

Here is my current studio setup:
Room 17x24 with 10 foot ceilings
This room has a floating hardwood floor. The walls, ceilings, and corners have been treated with auralex panels, diffusors, and bass traps. It is on a separate power service from the rest of the house. The external windows were filled with fiberglass insulation, with 1/4 inch plywood over them. They where then covered with auralex panels.

AMD X2 3800 three 250gb hd./2gb ram
Dual Sony 19 inch LCD monitors

Well I don't quite measure up

PC Based 2GB RAM, couple 60GB hard drives, dual monitors. M-Audio sound card, and a Roland SI-24. Logic Platinum, WaveLab, numerous plugs. Various Shure, AT, and Sennheiser mics. Some other odds and ends, patch bays, headphone amps, mixers etc. Plus guitar, steel, and bass amps.

I'm a little skinny on pre-amps, so I suppose that's the next frontier. Am thinking about picking up a Mackie 24-8 board, they seem to be plentiful.

My room is 24x20 with a cathedral vault ceiling. Working on the acoustics may be this winter's project.

I prescribe to the KISS rule..

My sole purpose and goal is to make simple quality recordings..here at home...

Not to record The Rolling Stones next album.

Yamaha AW2816 16 track workstation(the heart)
ART dual 12AX7 premap
Behringer 4 channel headphone amp
MXL 2001 Condensor mic
various dynamic mics..57's, 58's etc...
several misc. outboard effects
MAudio SP-5 Powered Near Fields

In the right hands,(ears)the AW2816 (AW4416) can turn out a pretty savy demo...Burns RED BOOK...Auto faders, scene memory, multiple effects, multiple processing and parametric EQ's, a plethora of patching, removable hard drive, etc....

I think it is difficult to live in both worlds efficiently, the practicing Musician and the die hard recording engineer. Both require steadfast dedication and constant attention to detail. Both require TIME...

I prefer to practice, but like to record as well...which is secondary...

I visited a long time friend in Ct last weekend, he was just finished up a new recording project with a good friend who engineered the project. I loved the last comment though..

"We are sending it off to be mastered"..

And yet another domain enters the playing field...

Roland VS-1880

2 - Shure SM-57 mikes
ART Pro VLA compressor
Lexicon MPX-200
Tascam CC-222 cassette/CD recorder
JVC home stereo amp w/Paradigm speakers

I usually mix down from the VS-1880 to a CD-R/W on the Tascam, then walk the CD over to a Windows computer for final mastering with WaveLab software.

For live stuff, I record directly through a little Mackie mixer to a CD-R/W disk in the Tascam. Just hit record.

Athlon Dual Core 4800+ with 4gb of RAM and a pair of 17" TFT monitors.

MOTU 24I/O hooked up to a Behringer 2442 Pro FX mixer. I use mostly my Studio Projects C1 for vocals but I have other mics. A pair of Oktava 012s for stereo pair stuff. I'm trying to collect some more large diaphragms for acoustic group stuff because I like bluegrass.

TASCAM CC-222 cassette and CD recorder/dubber.

Event TR8-XL reference monitors.

SONAR 5 PE, several Voxengo plugs, most of the Waves stuff, and the Sonitus suite that comes with Sonar are my main plugs but I have plenty of others that get used less.

Fender Jazz V bass, Roland ready strat to connect to my GR-33, Mexican Tele with upgrades pickups, Easman 800 series mandolin, Blueridge BR-180 with a Martin Thinline pickup, Stelling Staghorn banjo, Carter D-12 pedal steel, Regal dobro, Studiologic 88-key controller keyboard, and a few other instruments.

Have any of you tried any of the Behringer mics? I'm thinking of collecting a few. I got a Behringer C1 (they're pretty cheap) but I haven't had a chance to try it out yet. But I figured at around $45 each delivered, I may get about 10 of them if they're any good at all and then upgrades as funds are available.

I have a pair of Behringer condenser mikes that I use to mike the marimba onstage. They aren't great, but they were were cheap enough that I don't have to worry about them and they do the job.

I use the SE mikes to record the marimba. Sweet! The SE's are too sensitive for outdoor use, though, which is why I bought the Behringers.

Some Behringer is quite solid
even if older design techniques
and construct is used,
leading to a lower costs.

b0b is apparently having good luck with the
transients,
since he is playing marimba.
A good full range instrument with sharp attack envelopes.

On the mics as with ANY budget mic,
make sure you listen to more than one
in the store, through high and low freq sources,
because thay can be inconsistant.
bang a nice ride cymbal and play a 5 string bass down to low B, maybe listen to a kick drum.
As well as vocals.

If you find TWO that sound the same,
AND "good", grab one or both, likely
a decent mic at good value.

If you hear any discrepancies between them,
one is either a bad mic, or it is a bad inconsistant batch.
Same goes for most of the Chinese subcontracted,
or budget mics.

Though the bottom line is:
if you like the mic, for the price,
then it works for you.

Actually, the Behringer C-2 mikes don't cut it for recording. The frequency response curve is too wierd. But for the live situation they seem to work okay with careful positioning. The low frequency roll-off switch is absolutely necessary to avoid boominess and microphonic vibrations from the stage.

Well, I haven't found anything that sounds as good as my Studio Projects C1, but the Behringer B-1 wasn't far behind for $100. I can use the C-1 on anything. Tried the B1 on vocals (because it was cheap and right after my house fire). It was ok but I had to get a new C1 right after. If I had $2000, I'd get 10 of the C1s.

I live in a project studio, there are 2 4way headphone amps in either end of my flat. The walls are damped with acoustic panels, but its kept livable looking, a compromise but ok for me, I've dsigned a few studios, mostly big analog stuff, this setup is digital DAW-based, there are 2 computers networked and a couple of others used as console/remote control.

I've got a small studio here in my back yard with way to few componets to brag about but at the heart of my studio is Sonar PE 6.0 along with a Roland VM3100 digital board and a few other things to help me record. I'm am so happy to have a place to get away from my home and record that it wouldn't matter if I only had a 4 track cassete with a sm 58 I'd still be tickled to record and be in my own environment.

I love to record then tweak record some more then tweak some more. I will say that there are a lot of impressive studios mentioned here in this thread and I think we're all very lucky to have all this equipment and knowledge to share amongst ourselves. The folks that know a little more can help those that might be just getting started.

This is a great place to hang my hat on the net and I hope to help others as much as I can and to learn from others as much as I can.

I have plenty of great equipment which is good enough to make very high end recordings and if I had the skills they could very easily become masters. So you might say I'm trying to master the skills of mastering :-)

I love to record and until I got equipment good enough to make masters I was just as happy making good demos. Now if I can only master mastering LOL! I have come a long way as far as learning how to record and engineer but still have a good bit of learning to do. The funny thing is that after listening to some of the CD's I've sent out of here to be professionally mastered I often believed they sounded better before they left here so I know it's very easy to say you are a masterer of recordings but actually pretty hard to pull it off successfully. Just a little food for thought.

I just ordered as Shiney Box 23 to try out.

An inexpensive ribbon mic, will likely find some uses.
And maybe later get the better ones as a matched pair.

Lots of instruments, mostly made out of wood, lots of amps, Peavey and Magnatone. I'd take some pictures, but when I took some of my GFI, they came out too big and...it killed the thread.
