I am selling my collection of The Guitarist magazine, all 12 issues from 1935. I used them for researching the Hawaiian influence on
early "sacred steel" pioneer Troman Eason, who took lessons from Oahu instructor Jack Kahoualopua.

The magazines contain a wealth of information on the whole world of Oahu Publishing and early Hawaiian guitar in mainland US--instructors, lots of photos of students, radio broadcast listings, etc. A valuable resource for information on the most successful and enduring Hawaiian steel guitar instruction organizations, and the incredible number of Oahu students.

All magazines are in excellent condition and come in their original manila mailing envelopes (significantly deteriorated) addressed to Robert Tanner of Cleveland, Ohio.

I wanted to list here for the Forum family for a short time before putting the magazines on eBay.

Cool collection! I never knew such magazines existed. I've been curious about the guys/gals who went door to door selling lap steels, and can't find anything online. Do any of these magazines have an article about them?

'Kika Kila' by John Troutman has an interesting section on Oahu and the checkered past of the guy who ran it.

Joseph,

I have not read every word of every magazine, but don't recall any articles on door-to-door instrument sales. I would assume all the local Oahu studios used every means to sell instruments and instruction. Troman Eason was lured by radio broadcasts that included advertising.

Oahu claimed about 1,200 studios and more than 200,000 students!

Yes, Duane. Check your PM. Thanks.

Mike B.—Thanks for your kind words. It was a labor of love. I look forward to seeing many of steelers at the Sacred Steel Summit at the Florida Folk Festival Memorial Day weekend.

Wouldn't this be better suited to a for sale post?
