I just finished a new product that can be useful to many of y'all out there in steel land. The course is called SWINGING ON E9th - 12 Western Swing Steel Guitar Solo Arrangements for E9th Tuning.
The course was developed from my teaching of private lessons to players who wanted to get a more "swing sound" in their playing, but only had a single neck guitar with a Nashville E9th tuning. Using a basic 3 pedal / 2 knee lever setup (E-Eb and E-F) to achieve a "C6th tuning" sound, I designed this course for the experienced beginner through intermediate level player and features progressively more challenging arrangements of both traditional western swing instrumentals and popular standards of yesteryear played by swing bands. I teach alternative string grips to create more interesting chords, a few intros and endings, some single string licks, and several traditional jazz chord progressions only occasionally found in more "country-type" songs.
The CD contains me playing the solo with a rhythm track, followed by the rhythm track without the steel guitar solo. The 30-page book contains the tablature for all the songs and licks on the CD. As an aid to learning, the solos are recorded at slower tempos than normally would be played onstage. In addition to the songs and licks, there's short lesson in chord construction.

To those who have asked, this is a music CD and not a video DVD. The book is paper, of course  .
The two constructive suggestions have been made to me these past couple of days about my courses: first, that I do a video on DVD, and that's in the future for 2005.
Second, that I put the tablature on the CD as well in some form like .txt files or .jpeg files and just let the player print out the tab on his computer. While that would save a few trees , I think most guys simply like to look at a prepared book that they don't have to hassle with. Some amongst us are somewhat computer challenged, or don't have a printer, and that might stand in the way of full absorption of the material. But I can do both and in the future might add that feature to the CD/DVD.
Again, I'd like to thank the Forumites who've purchased my new stuff. I will have them at the Mesa AZ and Dallas TX shows, of course.

In response to several questions, yes, I am currently working on a Volume Two of Swinging On E9. This one will have 10 or 12 traditional Bob Wills numbers like Bubbles In My Beer, Faded Love, Maiden's Prayer, Deep Water, The Kind Of Love I Can't Forget, Sugar Moon, Time
Changes Everthang, that kind of stuff.
More later. I doubt I can have it done by the Texas show, but I'm a-trying.

Since I've answered this question three times in emails, I'll just post it to the thread.
On this course I used a woodneck Fessenden D-10, with True Tone pickups. Into a Goodrich 120 volume pedal. Then into a Digitech Genesis3 amp modeler set on "Black Face"/Jazz 1x15", into a Behringer 1202A mixer, and into my computer. The tracks were created in Band In A Box v.2004

Herb,
Since your answering some questions, I'm looking at Night Life right now. Using the standard thumb and two finger picks any hints or suggestions for playing some of those 5 note chords with the missing teeth between em?
This is my first time trying to play some of those extended voicings. For those first two ( D and F9), I am tempted to sweep my third finger down and thumb up resting the picks on strings 8 and 9 to block. But I guess it is also possible to block those two strings with the left thumb. That F9 at the bottom of page 17 sorta stumps me. 
P.S. I haven't been working on it yet, I'm on the previous page just peeking ahead. |

The way I play the multi-note chords is to do a quick arpeggio/semi-strum combination. The thumb hits the first note, followed by a multi-note thumb strum and one note each with the fingers. Occasionally I'll do a reverse rake with the fingers, however. Of course, it's easier to watch it done than it is to describe how it's performed.
On the first two chords in Night Life, you can simultaneously pick strings 10, 6, and 4 and get the correct sound without necessarily hitting all the notes in chord. Go with the sound.
