I'll add three more names...ROY THOMPSON who, in my opinion, has to be one of the finest steel players not only in Canada but also above many in the US. He is truly a remarkable musician!
Then, in Burlington you'll find a one-man band entertainer, BILLY REID Jr. Billy plays a beautiful Hawaiian style and is one of the very few who still uses the D9th tuning. I say "one man band" as he makes his own 'Band in the Box' rhythm tracs and does extensive entertaining for seniors, et al.
The third name which comes to mind is Mike Scott who has played the Tarannna scene (Toronto) for many, many years and is an exceptional Hawaiian steel guitarist.
Matter of fact, I could go on naming many names...there are so many fine Canadian steel guitarists...just far too many to list here.
Thanx Jody for your very kind words...though not a word of truth is there.
And, yes it is bloody cold here in Alberta. Cold enough to freeze the nuts off...a steel bridge of course....what were you thinking ? |

I didnt forget about what we discussed regarding the HCOA.I'm preparing to send you what you asked me for.
Yep, I did the Younge and Dundas circuit year back with Guy Mitchell. I always liked to play at the "Brown Derby" we would get finished at 11 pm saturday nights and those Canadian gals were cool too  I will send that package to you asap. I didnt forget.

KeokI: right you are about Roy Thomson. Roy has sent me several sound clips of his non-pedal playing in the Leavitt and Alkire tunings, and I've also heard a little of his work on pedal. Man, what a player!

...and is Billy Reid Jr the son of a Billy Reid who had a nand called The Royal Hawaiians in Halifax about twenty-five years ago? For awhile I was the only person listed as a ukulele player in the Musician's Union book, and he called me to fill in at a gig. I was young enough that my Dad had to drive me there. Billy Reid seemed OK with my playing, but he didn't think my shirt was colourful enough.
I assumed it was a local band, perhaps they were passing through. |

Hey, Doug! It's been a few years! Any chance you'll make the Wpg event this year?
Sir Geo, (and everyone who knows Tex Emery), Uncle Tex is moving to Nova Scotia! He's retired and Bonnie is taking a good job out there. I think they'll be gone before the Wpg event this year, so we may not see him that often, knowing how uh...frugal he can be !

| I'm actually a guitarist (i.e. six string electric and acoustic), but I do like to mess around with PSG once in while just to get a 'different sound'. As of late I discovered a couple of knee levers and figured out what they do. |
