Paul, watching a Dire Straits video on YouTube did I see TWO Steels set up ?

Talk about being prepared should a String break !
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dZwxzDli0Ds&search=Dire%20Straits

I imagine its safe to say that nobody is gonna' magically appear from stage right with another Steel should that dang KEY HEAD take out the 3rd string...

But I also suspect it may be another Steel with a totally different tuning , perhaps for the DOBRO phrases ?( How Long )

I also noticed what appears to be several Swithcy gizmo's going on between the necks of the Steel that you are playing. Can you comment on those items ?

How long did you tour with Mark and Company ?

Obviously this did not hurt your RESUME !

great stuff..
thanks
t

Tony,

That brings back some great memories.

The second guitar is a Pedabro.
The steel has two pickups per neck. I can switch to either one or use them both for an out of phase Strat tone in the middle of the guitar.

Larry,

That's a third guitar. It's the acousic lap steel, nicknamed "The Box"

The Pedabro was used on "Iron Hand".

I don't remember you playing the Pedabro on any tunes on the 'OTN' video. 'Iron Hand' wasn't on the video I have. I'm sure there were songs you guys did that didn't end up on the tape/DVD -- was that the only tune that you used the Pedabro on?

(could have sworn I saw legs on the Box and assumed it was the pedal - acoustic Pedabox. I must've seen the Pedabro set up and jumped to a wrong conclusion)

Thanks for giving us that wonderful performance. Walk of Life is still one of my all time favorite steel solos.

Thank goodness Paul didn't resort to a dobro "simulator!"

This is one of my all time favorite CD's in my collection, and I think is the best CD Dire Straights made. I wish I would've seen this post sooner.

Paul's steel on this CD is so tasteful. What a mix-a great steeler mixed with Mark Knopfler, one of my favorite guitarists!!!! I wish I had just half of these gentlemen's talent.
