I found a 33 1/3 LP by the Hawaiian Islanders at a goodwill store. The record label is EVON Records out of New Jersey and it is recorded from the from the Hawaii Calls radio show. No date on the record or cover anywhere. I'm trying to date it so I can figure out who the steeler is. Any ideas? |

Hey Terry, sometimes there is a date stamped into the vinyl itself between the label and the end of the groove....
Slim chance, but maybe!

EVON #304 ?
The copy I have has what sounds to me to be 3 or 4 different steelers from different recordings. I'm pretty certain Dick McIntire is on the last couple of cuts on each side, but the other steelers leave me scratchin' my head. Eddie Bush, Sol Bright ?
They all sound like late 30's or early 40's cuts and I'd be really surpised of there was any connection with "Hawaii Calls".
This LP was also issued on Ultraphonic as "We Are Having A Holiday In Hawaii". Ultraphonic calls the musicians The Halo Hawaiians & was issued in 1957.
Probably more than wanted to know. |

Jay, no date. There are some numbers that are probably a code for a date but they don't resemble a date as I would know it. Dave, yes, it is EVON #304. The name of the album is Hello Hawaii by the Hawaiian Islanders. And you are right about it not being connected with "Hawaii Calls". I must have dreamt that part. It is a compilation of standards. It sure is a cool album, though. I've been playing it over and over.

McIntire, Bush, and Bright ... none of them were ever on "Hawai'i Calls". Years ago, I asked Sol K. Bright Sr if he was ever on "Hawai'i Calls". His reply, "Never". However, Sol's brother Andy was on the show during the early years, 1948 thereabouts. He had that great deep voice usually heard in chants or songs such as "Hawaiian Cowboy" which was composed by brother Sol. I have a couple of old (bargain priced) lp's which mention "Hawai'i Calls" on the jacket ... both of them are phonies. I'm sure the only purpose was to capitalize on that great program's name. |

DAVE: "Ultraphonic calls the musicians The Halo Hawaiians" ....
Perhaps that description is correct. Most probably all of them are wearing "halos" by now as they play their heavenly harps instead of steel guitars (?) |
