We all know about The Texas Troubadours great instrumentals from the 60's & 70's but who has the best band in your opinion today? Does any of the new groups do any instrumentals? This would be the country acts of today, not Bluegrass or Rock.

It would be hard to beat the Everly Brothers' band, with Buddy Emmons and Albert Lee. Is that country? I don't know anymore.

"The Players" - Paul Franklin, Brent Mason, John Hobbs, Michael Rhodes, and Eddie Bayers.

While a lot of there tunes fit the blues / rock / jazz vein, they occassionally pull out a beautiful, more country tune that shows why they are the A-team. I just don't have words to describe how good they are. It is really inspiring, and they are actually playing again this Tuesday night at 3rd & Lindsley in Nashville.

I'd nominate the Timewarp Tophands, with Tommy Morrell at the helm.

Bill Anderson's Po Boys (or Po Folks) band still ranks up at the top with me. Surely they get to do instrumentals as they are still a true country band.

I would consider the Everlys to be country. Asleep at the Wheel I'm sure still does instrumentals. What about the artists bands we hear on the radio like The Ace in The Hole band? I wonder how many stay together long enough to work some instrumentals up?

Personally, I don't think the music business is about "bands", anymore. Today, it's the star, and the star alone! How many of today's country stars even have a band that does their own recordings? Can anyone name even one? Most of the stars out there today don't want any other star on the stage with them. They just want "background music" that sounds just like the session guys that did on the record. It ain't like it used to be. Road players now get little or no credit for what they do, and believe me, the stars don't let 'em do much! Some stars don't even introduce their band members!

Sorry for the negative rant. This is just a sore spot for me, and it's just the way I see it.

...Donny, not to rain on your dirge , but I think Vince Gill and Clint Black are a couple stars who are pretty loyal to their road bands...

Well, if you are talking about actual bands, I would say it's hard to beat George Strait's band, The Strangers, The Everly Bros., and Asleep at the Wheel.

Just my opinion.

Alan Jackson's band and George Strait's band appeal to me but so do the Everly's,PF and the Players, Hag's band, J. Hughey and Vince's band. Golly, how can one choose?

It's hard to say. Most of the bands backing up the the current "stars of the the road" are good. They have to "cover" what's been done in the studio by ..basicly The Players..
Brad Paisley has a terriffic band ..which He IS the lead guitar..and he features his band. The Ace IN THE Hole ..still has some original members..which also cover what Paul and the gang has done..As well as Allan's group..which very handley cover what "Paul and the gang have done..and on and on..SHe Diasy'd band ..excelent...The Chicks band..excelent..Reba's ..always excelent. Kenny Chesney's ..excelent..Tim McG"S excelent....The staff band on the Oprey..ussually includes Tommy W and Hoot...what can I say....excelent...Those guys are great who ever they're pickin' with,
Asleep at the wheel is a Band..Whatever happened to the Pirats of the Mississippi?.
When they were together..The Desert Rose Band.. but as stated in an earlier post...the band REALY ISN'T featured..It's the ACT or Star!

Jason,

"The Players" was put together by Eddie Bayers (drums) for a CMT or TNN show that tried to showcase the studio players in Nashville. From there, they cut a CD that I think can be bought on country.com. For the last few months they have been playing occassionally at a club - 3rd & Lindsley in Nashville.

Each one of these guys are really at the top of their instrument, and it's fun to hear them "let it all hang out".

Is John Hughey back with Vince? As I read the original post, I interpret it to mean a band that is intact as of today. If we are to include bands of yesterday, I would have to include The Po' Boys with Garrish, The Statesiders with Bethel, Charlie Prides band with Gene O'Neil, The Twitty Birds with Hughey, The Coalminers with Bobby Hempker and Hank Thompson's Brazos Valley Boys with Burt Rivera. All KILLER bands.
