Tough Question! Opera has gotta sound great. I am a newbie, and play some Enya, and it sounds pretty nice. Look at Mike Perlowin's "Firebird Suite"! Pink Floyd (David Gilmore) heavy metal rock sounds awesome, just listen and look at these songs! (5th down on left) The "new" country sucks IMHO...(the music that is, not the steel) what can I say. And rap ain't music....real down home Blues is good too. I'd have to say what wouldn't sound good (to me) on steel is Dance, Progressive, Bluegrass, some Easy Listening, Tejano, Italian Pop and Mexicana. I think music such as Jazz, Blues, Light Rock, Alternative Rock, Classic Rock, R&B, Contemporary, Gospel, Classical, 70's, 80's, Solid Gold Oldies, all sound good on the steel... yadda, yadda, yadda...

...I started to say "polka", but then I played a couple in my head, plugged in the steel instead of a clarinet, and it sounded OK!...Mariachi? No, the steel could substitute for horn harmonies...Sousa Marches? As long as you don't have to actually march, I could hear the steel in the mix, Sousa has great arrangements...Calypso? I don't know if the steel guitar would replace the steel drums out front, but they certainly would fit for fills...
...Rap was the first thing that came to my mind, but I don't want to be too hasty in ruling that out, you never know... |

On "The Notting Hillbillies" album Paul Franklin plays some stuff that might be described as calypso or cha cha or I don't know......but the point is IMHO it sounds good.
So there goes one more form where we may have doubts. I kind of have a feeling that you have to have a good song first, otherwise you're fighting an uphill battle from the get go. |

I would go so far as to say,you could take a steel to India.Find a long enough extention cord to plug your amp.Then set your steel out in the market in front of one of those jugs.And if you got the talent,quiver that bar just right .You could charm a cobra out of the jug.Let's see would we Quiver the 0=11

I wouldn´t exclude ANY instrument from ANY kind of music, but I would exclude ALL accordions from ALL kinds of music.

I have played in a few new music operas and it was very challenging and fun. The money was much better than a typical country gig. NYC has a great Hip Hop and Rap music tradition. I really hope that I get a chance to play with some of those guys some time soon. To my ear the Rap/ Hip Hop scene has some of the most creative and talented
producers and artists that are making a living in popular music these days.
The best live music scene around here is Latin music. Big, wild dance parties with a stage full of killing musicians. Once I get my jazz chops a bit more together I plan on being the weird white guy on stage with those cats !

We'd BETTER find a way to get steel into hip hop if we want kids to start getting interested in our instrument.
When we say "Rap isn't music" we eliminate ourselves from what will be the dominant form of poplular music for the next 10-20 years.
While not being involved in hip hop might suit some here just fine, it does nothing for the future of our instrument.

Johan,
Performing around the world, Itzhak's classical violin has captured many hearts. I really admire an accomplished violin/fiddle picker, only four strings, no pedals or knee levers and no obsolete Session 500 sitting in the basement and no pain in the back injuries from picking up a violin case! Just what is it about the steel that has made me an addict!
