Headphones

Post by Chip Fossa »

What is the easiest [guf-fah,guf-fah] to hook up a set of headphones on this PC? I have an
HP Pavilion PC, and altho, it has a 1/8" mini-plug receptacle in the front of the unit for a headset application, that 'app' is only if you are listening to something that's in the CD player......another bogus,
BS, rip-off, as far I'm concerned.

I want to be able to listen to this whole stupid mass thru a set of phones, sometimes!!!

PLEASE HELP?!?!

Thanks again, ya'll...

Hey, Chipper-- Easiest way I found was to go to the local Radio Shck (or whatever) and get an adapter with male and female connectors to fit. I got one 24 inches long which allows me to plug it into the back of the computer (where the speakers are now) and bring the other end out front.

Plug either the speakers or headset into the end of the adapter, which ever you want to use. If you wanted to get fancier, it would be easy to wire a double-throw switch and then be able to A/B the speakers/headset.

They'll sell a little job that has 1 male connecter and then branches out to 2 females at the back. Plug your speaker lead into one, and get yourself a set of headphones with a nice long cord (make sure it's got the little male plug) and go to town. If you want to listen to your speakers, you're good to go, and if you want to listen to just headphones, then turn your speaker volume all the way down.

Many PC speaker systems come with a built in headphone jack. Check your speakers for a jack.

Thanks everyone. All good advice here. Yes, I
do have multiple 'Y' splitters already on the IN & OUT on the soundcard.
Yeah, I would have to turn the volume off at the speakers [there is a volume knob for the
speaker system] and then control the headset
via the PC internal volume control.

Ev, I went and bought a 'stereo audio source selector'[a 3-button job] from RadioShack [about $14]in order to shutdown the 'out' on a cassette recorder when recording to it. Otherwise, I can't set record levels as I get
feedback screeching. So with this selector,
something is always ON. #1 is for the 'out' from the cassette, #'s 2 & 3 aren't being used, so I'll bet the phones would work here.
I'll mess with it later.

If you're getting feedback screeching through your speakers, try muting out your Microphone volume level, if there's one plugged into your computer. Seems that should solve the problem... if there's nothing to feed back into, there shouldn't be any feed back, right?

Michael,
Thank you; I do have a 'mike input', but at this time it is not being utilized. On the back of my PC, only the IN and OUT are in service at this time. There is an 'IN' for
"MIKE" but it's not being used.
