Error message

Post by Joe Delaronde »

I get an error message while trying to load a program.

Message reads;
"An error occured in Ole2nls.dll. Please try reinstalling OLE."

I found the file in Windows\System sub directory. How do I reinstall it??

Thanks in advance..
Joe

OLE is one of those MS acronymns for Object Linking and Embedding. It is a means of sharing information between programs.
Could you list:
a. What OS are you using? 95,98,ME,NT, 2000,XP?
b. What program were you tring to load? (and Version)
c. Were you installing this program for the first time, or had it been installed and worked OK before?
d. Have you put any service packs (upgrades) on the OS?
The reason for the questions is that sometimes programs put a version of a dll that is not right for the operating system and sometimes the dll that exists isn't right for the program.

Larry
OS Win 98
Family Tree Maker Version 7.0
Was already loaded, worked good last week, but got the error message when I tried to load it tonight. I reinstalled with the same results.

I have not upgraded my OS for a 2 months.

Try renaming Ole2nls.dll to something like Ole2nls.dll.old, if the OS will let you, and reinstalling your program again. If it won't let you, boot into either DOS or Safe Mode and try again. Windows is notorious for not overwriting a file that it thinks is the same.

Two possibilities:
1. the path statement is incorrect
or
2. One of the duplicate registry files is corrupt.

To eliminate #1 as a possibility, get to a C:\> prompt or MSDOS prompt and type SET (enter)
you should see a line that looks exactly like this:
WINDIR=C:\WINDOWS
Look for ; instead of :, no \ or any change no matter how minor. If you find one, I'll tell you a simple fix.

If not, it's going to take regedit to fix it. Look for a file in the family tree directory that ends with .reg and it will have to be merged with reg.dat [not for the faint of heart]
3rd option:
FTM's support site forum has this on your error message. http://familytreemaker.genealogy.com/support/errors/13958.html?Welcome=1006138311
[This message was edited by Larry Beck on 18 November 2001 at 07:01 PM.]

FTM's suggestions look logical, I'd try those first.
