Topic: Adaptec vs Sony CRX100E/2 Burner |

I have a Sony CD Burner, CRX100E/2 [USB]
and would rather use Adaptec CD Creator 4.0
software. I was told by Sony Tech to
download the proper drivers for CRX from their website.
'ADD NEW HARDWARE' wizard is supposed to pop
up after plugging back into the computer the
CRX, but it's not happening.
So I'm having a problem getting not only these drivers installed, but installed in the right place.
At one point Adaptec program had the CRX
listed, but all clickable options in the tool
bar were grayed out; I guess Adaptec couldn't
recognize the drivers.
Any help on this one, fellas [and ladies],
will of course be greatly appreciated.
PS - Sony Tech has been telling what to do,
but it's not working.

From your description, it sounds like the Sony software is not installed correctly or one part is missing.
What update were you instructed to install?? I don't find any updates for your listed USB drive on the Sony updates lists. I see one for the ATAPI interface drive but not the USB model.
I also checked the Adaptec listing and your drive is listed as being supported by CD Creator 4, so it goes back to, probably, the software installation for the Sony CD drive.
Sadly, from your description, Sony tech support is like most manufacturers support - worthless.

Jack,
Sony said to uninstall the SPRESSA software
as this would conflict with Adaptec software.
They said only to install the drivers associated with Spressa. There are 5 of them and I downloaded them to a folder on C:/
drive.
The drives were obtained from the following Sony site:

I have the drivers, but can't seem to find out where or how they go.

Adaptec EZCD has been known to cause problems with other burning software. There's a solution, but I can't remember exactly what it is. It involves renaming a certain file (.vxd ?) to something else.
You may be able to get some answers by posting your question here:

Be forewarned: you may get many "flames" for using Adaptec EZCD, and "advice" like "get rid of the cr@p and get something better". But eventually, somebody who knows what he's doing will post a helpful answer.

Thanks again David. I'll try that link.
I would go to Adaptec.com, but seeing how
the program was given to me [it's really
registered to someone else] I can't access
their helpsite without registering; which
is out of the question.

Well, if you're into (ahem) "borrowing" software, there are better ones to try.
I've been perfectly happy with Adaptec EZCD, but I'm using version 3.x -- I've heard of many people who have problems with 4.x -- then again, a friend of mine uses it with no problems at all.

I have the Adaptec EZ CD4 Deluxe and it works great, both for burning and the software for audio processing and saving/converting files. It is very user friendly, especially for a novice user.
It interfaces well with my HP internal CD Writer.

| I am using The new Adaptec 4.0 Software. I had problems with it until I called Adaptec and they gave me a long proceedure to use to uninstall all the old CD burning stuff that the add/remove program does not remove. After I followed their proceedure, my CD burner now works great. One advantage of the new software is that it automaticly converts MP3 files to waves when coping them to a CD. Give them a call as I feel sure they will solve your problem.. |

I went to the 'delphi' link that David
posted and searched Adaptec...and finally
wound up on Adaptecs helpline. For WIN98
they have a very long process, none of which doing absolutely gaurantees anything will work.
It also involves going into the REGISTRY,
which I'm not gonna even think about doing.
In SYSTEM PROPERTIES/DEVICE MANAGER/CD-ROM/
the CRX100 is in there. When I click on PROPERTIES/DRIVER the message says "no driver files are required or have been loaded for this device".
So after exploring different avenues in UPDATE DRIVERS one way says that WINDOWS will look for better drivers and comes back and says the ones that are installed are the best/the program is functional. Well the program isn't functional.
Part of Adaptec help said that if you're having problems with the current driver from the manufacturer, then try using the 'standard VGA driver' provided by Micros
oft.
When I tried installing the 5 Sony drivers in the UPDATE DRIVER section, it didn't seem
like it took. Sony Tech said to send the drivers back to their hardrive folder, but if I remember correctly, I wasn't able to do that.
Anyway, as it stands now, everything is in place except that the 'burner' doesn't have anything to drive it.

When I first installed a HP CD WriterPlus there was a conflict with the original CD driver (I beleive that it was a Toshiba driver). After that was taken care of and the right driver was intalled no problem.
It sounds like your problem is related to not having the right CD driver for you hardware.
I also use Adaptec software and I have NO complaints and have had NO trouble with it.

Thanks Mario. Yes, I believe you are right.
I'm getting closer to figuring this out.
The drivers mays still be the right ones, but
WIN98 is not recognizing them; and in DEVICE MANAGER, when I try to load the drivers to the CRX, WINDOWS comes back and says that the drivers that are installed are the "best"
possible ones for this device. And the
driver they list is: WINDOWS\INF\MSCDROM.INF
So this is not the driver for the CRX.
I'm back with Sony Tech again and telling them basically the same thing. The drivers
will not or cannot install.
