I don't like the sound of the fine string in Hawaiian music,___the high G on the C6th and the high G# on the E13th. Do other Hawaiian players feel this way?
When playing all Hawaiian tunes I like for my first string to be E.

I've found it goes 50/50 in hawaiian music...I personally use the high G in C13...do what works for you...

What is the heaviest string gauge you guys use on the high G. .012?

I'm with you Rick. To my ears E is as light as I want to go on the first string. For about 3 years I had my Fender DeLuxe 8 (22.5 scale) tuned to a 7-string G major tuning: 7-GBDGBDG-1, because I was playing in a Cajun band where I used a lot of open strings in the keys of G and C. I never did like the sound of that high G. Hawaiian music on that tuning, played using a lot of slants, only exacerbated the problem.
But in the end, it's a matter of personal choice. There are a lot of Hawaiian and western swing steelers using those high Gs and G#s. |

| For musical reasons,I like the high G. But if you take that whole tuning down to Bb6 or A6 then you can go to a bigger guage string and still have that interval on your first string. -MJ- |

I'm with you, Rick. With an E gauge for your top string, you can tune to A6th, C6th or B11th. These tunings sound very authentic and mellow for Hawaiian music. The high G or G# are really best suited for country music and western swing.
