I have an arrangement of "Cocoanut Grove" that I play in the C6th tuning (8-string). Does anyone have an arrangement that they like to play in a different tuning?

In all of my Jerry Byrd collection, I don't have an arrangement by him. Does anyone know if he ever recorded it? If so, on what album? Also, who else do you think has a good arrangement?

Rick

Rick, Jerry Byrd has a great recording of Coconut Grove from his earlier years prior to moving to Hawaii. Also, Buddy Charlton has a great arrangement with Leon Rhodes and the Troubadors. Sorry I don't have recordings available or I would make you a copy. Would like to have a copy of either one or both myself.

Jerry recorded "Cocoanut Grove" on a Mercury Album in the 50's. Number MG 20345. It was titled,

Jerry Byrd

"Steel Guitar Favorites"

He used an A7/C6 tuning to play it. The strings are as follows:

E
C
A
G
E
C#

His kick-off to the tune went like this.

3rd fret, strum strings 5, 4, 3 and 2, then 5, 4 and 3. Then slide down one fret and strum strings 6, 5 and 4 and slide down one more fret.

Then mute the strings and back at the 3rd fret strum strings 5, 4, 3 and 2. Mute the strings and do one of JB's classic "split-slants" on strings 2, 3 and 5 with 2 and 3 straight and 5 slanted one fret below. Do this 3 frets up and slide back one fret as the 3 strings sustain.

Use very little treble on your amp and a lot of bass for the correct sound as JB did it.

Nice lick once ya get it down right.

Good luck with it. And God bless you,

carl

Lloyd Green did a sweet version of Coconut Grove. I think the album was called "Shades of Green" or "10 Shades of Green"?
