Otwin 8-string

I have the chance of buying an Otwin 8-string. Anyone know anything about them? This has a sliding pickup OVER the strings, which also contains the volume control and the jack socket - there is no wiring on or in the body itself! This means that the pickup assembly is often in the way of your right hand especially when palm blocking. I thought I may be able to put the pickup under the strings, where it belongs. Any thoughts on moving to 8-strings? I've just got used to six, and the strings on this seem very close together.
