Very nice, John (Steele)! I'll have to work hard to keep up with you.
John L., Thank you for the kind words. Actually, it's the 5th pedal for a B7 chord at the ninth fret. You can play the F#m7b5 with pedal 6 at the ninth fret, then rock over to to the 5th pedal for the B7.
The guitar is a Carter, an instrument which has always pleased me. (but let's not start that brand x versus y argument here, folks...)
I have Lawrence 710's on both necks.
I'll try to post another 4 bars tomorrow. Stay tuned.
[This message was edited by Jerry Gleason on 05-19-99]

Thanks for responding Jerry. The reason I ask about the guitar is that I was seriously looking at Carters at Wayne Link's due a month ago and I was looking for "that" tone that you got on that wave file, but did not find it on those guitars. That's hands notwithstanding. Also, the wave file really helps me hear the changes. Do you have a really good soundcard? Could I make one with a generic soundcard and an input from my Mackie mixer into the mic input of my computer? I'd like to join you boys.
PS- Jerry, in playing over the F#m7b5, are you regarding it as a diminished (half) and thinking about diminished scales for it? It's been a stumbling block for me.
[This message was edited by John Lacey on 05-20-99]

John, if I may jump in here... Yes, by all means, join in! The more the merrier.
Yes, the F#m7b5 chord is also called "F# half-diminished". You have two scale choices to use over this chord. First, the 7th mode (locrian mode) of the major scale. In the case of F#m7b5, it comes from the G major scale.
e.g. F#-G-A-B-C-D-E-F#. That's the one Jerry used. Look closely at his tab for bar 13, and you'll find they are all notes from the G major scale.
The second option in the 6th mode of the melodic minor scale, (also called Locrian, or half-diminished mode)in this case, for F#m7b5, you'd use A melodic minor.
e.g. F#-G#-A-B-C-D-E-F#. You'll notice the difference between the two lies simply in G# versus G natural. The melodic minor mode sounds more "modern". I'll try to use it in my next four bars as an example. The diminished scale you mentioned is not used for half-diminished chords. Only for diminished chords and 7b9 chords. (The pickup bar I wrote leading into bar #1 used the Half-step-whole step diminished scale over the E7b9)(E-F-G-G#-A#-B-C#-D)
This dialogue is great! I'm going to keep my comments on sections in the "notes" thread though, in case someone wants to print this one off.
- John
p.s. It might be timely to dig up that old thread on Modes in the bar chatter section, I'll look for it!
[This message was edited by John Steele on 05-20-99]

Whew! Thanks John S., for that explanation. Much better than I could have explained it.
John L, I posted my "tech notes" on the "notes" thread. Thanks.
Looking forward to shifting gears on the bridge with some different changes...
[This message was edited by Jerry Gleason on 05-20-99]

Superb!! You guys have gotten onto something that has great potential, e.g. on-line lessons with everyone able to audit the class!

Better squeeze in where I can! This is a departure from the other guys, with a steal from Buddy! The octaves are played in dotted quarters and eighths, and a bit of overlap into the 5th. bar. Sorry, whoever.
Also, I wasn't able to record using my sound recorder, so phone me and I'll Hum it to you!

Kenny et al...
No, it's not your comp. I think I may
have imposed too much on Jerry's webspace. He's been very kind to put these sounds up on his limited space. Please e-mail me, and I'll send you the file. I think it's the best of the bunch I posted. It's 77KB, not too big.
Fun fun fun...
-John
p.s. I'm going to inquire into putting these up on some webspace of my own.. might take a couple of days. Until then, Jerry, Thanks!!
[This message was edited by John Steele on 05-22-99]
