Iam getting destortion when picking hard

Post by Robert Schott »

I am getting some destortion when I pick my strings hard or with force. When I pick softer no destortion.
Is it just me or anyone else experience this ?

All strings?
With a different amp? In a quiet room with no amp can you still hear it? If only one string it could be a Sitar effect from a roller/nut/changer. If all strings through multiple amps - check pickup height, etc. If only one amp/signal chain you can address that.

Hope you get it figured out.

Post your amp settings. Also what kind of amp, tube or solid state.

It is not uncommon for an amplifier to have a gain structure that responds to pick attack. If you have a preamp volume or gain control, turn that down and increase the master volume to clean up the harder pick attack.

Your strings might be too close to the pick up

Another suggestion - It's not uncommon for a PSG to overdrive a preamp because the pickups are so hotly wound and put out 3-4x the amplitude of a conventional electric guitar pickup. One solution is to plug into input 2.

Also you might consider lowering the pickup away from the strings a bit- esp Lawrence pickups.

As others have said, your pickup may be too close to the strings, but don't overlook cables. Swap them out one by one.

If your amp has a master volume, make sure it's on a higher number than the channel volume. If it's not, i. e. Channel volume higher than the master volume, distortion will occur. Guitar players like that, but, steel players preferring cleaner sounds don't.

This used to happen to me when I was using a 710 humbucker. Steel pickups are super hot. I just switched to low output pickups and it solved a lot of problems. Trying lowering the pickup, if that doesn’t work, get a low output single coil.
