Chuck Foreman (with Eddie Cochran)? Worth a listen!

Post by Tim Toberer »

Anyone familiar with this player? I believe he might be playing a multi chord, but it is more non-pedal than pedal steel sounding. I found this through a playlist on Spotify. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P80mOQ3 ... Cn&index=1

My first listen through I thought this was Eddie playing with Speedy West, Jimmy Bryant and Merle Travis. I can't find much info on this, but apparently these are Eddie's earliest recordings. Eddie can really play and sing! The interplay between the vocals and guitar with the steel is some of the best I have ever heard. I do like his later stuff, but this is the best. Sad he didn't continue in this direction, but I suppose music was headed in a different direction and he was going with the times.

That's extremely cool! Thanks for sharing. Could it be a Bigsby?

Presumably it's not the same Chuck Foreman who was once an outstanding running back for the Minnesota Vikings, and was covered like a blanket by my former high school classmate and one time Nebraska Cornhusker Monte Johnson in Super Bowl XI in Pasadena.

There is an old thread here about Chuck Foreman: viewtopic.php?t=206115

Some interesting information on that thread, especially from the late Billy Tonnesen.

I too thought the player might be Speedy West... same style but not quite as wild as Speedy. :)

Interesting looking MultiKord in this picture, can't find another quite like it. Picture is from Discogs. Seems he didn't make any or many other recordings.

Foreman was only 20 years old when he made those early Eddie Cochran recordings. And Eddie was only 15! It seems that Foreman was good with electronics and he had a pretty decent home recording studio, for 1953. So they made the early recordings together, and according to what I’ve read, Foreman never again played with Eddie Cochran. Unfortunately, Eddie died at age 21 in a car accident in the UK.

I think Foreman continued playing with local bands in Southern California. I’ve seen a couple pictures of him playing on stage, circa 1960s.

This just baffles the mind.

Yes, but it happens sometimes. LeAnn Rimes was 13 when she recorded her hit song “Blue”. Steve Winwood started the Spencer Davis Group when he was 15. Stevie Wonder had his first hit, “Fingertips” at age 13. It’s pretty rare though, especially when the young person writes the songs as well as sings them.
I had trouble remembering my paper route at that age!
