All banjo tips should be free, right? Anyway I've been using a teflon rod for a bar plus eq to get a pretty good dobro sound. I was tweaking the eq a bit for my banjo sound. It was OK, but at a rehearsal I didn't have my teflon bar, but the singer had a roll of Necco wafers which sounded pretty amazing. It's about the damping, so when I got home I found that a dry-erase marker sounds PERFECT. I cut the tip off and sanded the label off, leaving the guts inside.

I’ve used Sharpies (gray with the black cap) for decades, as well as other markers, the cut-off end of a broomstick, combs, and just about anything else you could think of.
