Split Tuning on a Push Pull?

Probably a dumb question but can it be done and, if so, is it a difficult thing to do? I have a 3x5 with the up lever lowering 5 and 10 a half a tone. I cannot really get the half pedal in tune very well and would like to be able to use that change.

It is possible, but not for all strings without really messing up the travel of other pedals. I have the vert knee split on my 5 string on 2 push-pulls right now. Kelcey has done it on the 6th string as well.

You will need a Sho-Bud 2 hole bell crank, a fine tuning swivel and an extra pull rod assembly.

Here is a diagram of how it goes together, please excuse my handwriting:

Basically, you turn that string into a pull release. You tune the split with the adjustable screw to prevent it from lowering beyond the tuned split. You do have to add a considerable amount of spring to give it slack which does increase pedal travel on the A pedal. It can take a bit of fiddling to get it just right. The push rod for lowering 5 goes straight through the hole to lower the raise finger. Tune the lower without the split as normal. I wouldn't recommend trying this unless you work on push-pulls frequently.

Here it is in action on the A pedal of an Emmons student model with 3 & 5. May be hard to see.

To me the easiest and simplest way to split 6th sting is put and extra bell crank on A pedal with a fine tuner screw with rod going to 6th string. It’s called the fake split. It doesn’t get in the way of anything and works great but with knee lever on 6th lowered a whole tone, you have to press A pedal to bring back up a half.
