Man this forum is a valuable resource.
I finally have a usable split between -Bb and +C# on the E neck string 5.

I searched the discussions for details of this operation and found a few descriptions.

After getting it sorted out and dialing in the pitches, I was elated, but still scratching my head as to how it is physically possible...

I wondered, if that extra rod just puts the Bb back in tune, do I not just have the same starting point as I did before adding the extra rod?

If my understanding about the physics of it all is correct, it goes something like this.

The Bb changer finger is set to lower the same amount regardless of what else is happening. When that lever is engaged on its own, the extra rod, introduced to same lever, counters that with a few cents raise to make it in tune as a Bb.
Combined with that lever, the A or C pedal effectively does the same thing but pulls it up to a resultant C natural.
The aha part of the equation for me was that the A or C pedal overrides that small pull that the extra rod provides, but that lower amount on the changer finger remains the same regardless.

Glad you figured it out. Here is a diagram I made several years ago.

Yes Mike, that's more or less how I did it. That's a good illustration and explanation.
I think I had to go up one slot on the bellcrank to get more lowering leverage.
Slightly more tension on the lever now but works great.
