Jerry Byrd (Shot Jackson Built) Frypan 8 string lap steel. Serial Number B-120 purchased new on 9/2/2001. Guitar is essentially new, has never left home and played very little.

My understanding is that the horseshoe on these are purely cosmetic and not a magnetized horseshoe pickups like the ones on the original Ricks. Is that the case with this one? Always curious if these are all the same or if some had different pickups. Thanks! _________________ Remington Steelmaster S8 w/ custom Steeltronics pickup. Hey, Dave, I did some research and it is a faux horseshoe (and more of a hand rest) and not a magnet like Rick Frypans. That said, the good news is every comment I came across said the guitar sounds great and is joy to play, so good luck with the sale--it's a great price!!! _________________ Remington Steelmaster S8 w/ custom Steeltronics pickup. Wonderful steel guitar at a great price !!!
The "faux" magnets do contribute to the output/tone in two ways :
1) Steel backed magnets are stronger, so the oversized alnico 5 pole pieces are "juicier" with the fauxs on ..
2) the upper flange of the "faux" helps to keep the magnetic lines of force perpendicular to the plane of the coil ... which is favorable |

Thanks! Interesting steel. Anybody- Didn’t he play the short scale (22 1/2”) ones as well? I know very little about Mr Byrd, or his instruments. |
