Buddy said this to me:
"First, the producers say, "get me Buddy Emmons", then, "get me a Buddy Emmons", then it's "who's Buddy Emmons?".

Chris this is an old session players joke and it goes like this as hiring players are being tossed about...

Producer says "Never heard of this new player", then its "Get me the new guy, Pete...Then they ask every steel player, "Can you play some Pete Drake?...Then the final career stage, Who is Pete?

Also known as the five stages of an actor's career:

1) Who is Hugh O'Brian?
2) Get me Hugh O'Brian!
3) Get me a Hugh O'Brian type.
4) Get me a young Hugh O'Brian.
5) Who was Hugh O'Brian?

Apparently attributed to (actors) Mary Astor or Hugh O'Brian. (Ironically, I had to look up who Mary Astor and Hugh O'Brian were!) I first heard it used in an interview with Slim Pickens.

Nothing last forever. It's a simple matter of waiting your turn.

I saw a cartoon posted in a studio, in Nashville, that said "I made mine in the steel guitar business", with a drawing of a hobo .
The "steel guitar business" was interchangeable with something else. I believe that made the studio rounds too, with various statements.

A select few of us wind up being truly great, and may be long remembered. But for the rest of us, the other 99.9%, we'll have to be content with being "not so great", and will quickly be forgotten - unless we accidentally do something significant. The world rewards mediocrity with ambivalence.

Good point, Donny.

My only fear is that I'll actually be remembered for being 'Not so great'.

Sad

Seems I've bypassed all but the final stage.

And for the rest of us, "There's tens of dollars to be made playing music."
